Pennsylvania Job Market

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hey there, I'm Catherine.

I'm an RN with a BSN. I am currently in the midst of a move to PA (would like to live near Hazelton) and I was wondering what the job market was like. I started my career in Denver, and it took me a horrifying 6 months to find a job. I took the first one I was offered, but it was not in acute care. I now have 1 year of experience in subacute rehab (although at least 1/3 of my patients belonged on a med surg floor) and I would like to get a job in medsurg in PA. Can anyone tell me what the market is like? Are they open to accepting people with my qualifications or are the hospitals ignoring you unless you have 1 year in acute care as they are in colorado? Any info would be helpful and much appreciated!

Welcome to PA forum!

NE section of state hospitals are hiring compared to my Philly area with scant jobs.

Look at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton; Pocono Medical Center, Tobyhanna;

Some travel to Wilkes Barre / Scranton area or Allentown for more abundent opportunities

Specializes in ICU.

I work out in Danville, PA right now Geisinger Medical Center, they have a few hospitals in Hazleton, Wilkes Barre, they seem to be acquiring all the small hospitals in Central, PA. They hire new grads, even before you get your license so give them a try.

That sounds pretty encouraging! Do they do 12 hr shifts? What's the pay rate like? It's usually around $20 hr in the rural areas of upstate NY. . . Nice to hear they're hiring new grads!

I am currently waiting for entrance to the nursing program at a community college and I browse jobs occasionally to make sure I'm safe and I'm never disappointed lol. Geisinger Medical Center, Lehigh Valley are the two big ones near here, St Lukes a little South, Wilkes Barre and Scranton. Compared to the fierce competition I saw in NYC I am counting my lucky stars to be out here. I even allow myself to dream that I will land an L&D job as a new grad lol

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I just started my job search yesterday. I'll let you know how it goes and what the market is like for me!
