Mt. Lebanon vs. Scranton

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone, from a nursing perspective, can tell me about these areas of PA? And, if you are familiar with both areas, can you tell me which one you like better and why?

I'd like to know pro's and con's, things to do, and best hospitals in these areas to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thank you,

Jay

though i no longer live there, i'm from the pittsburgh area. i also had a relative that lived in the scranton area, so i'm a little bit familiar with it. (though i've never worked in either place).

mt. lebanon is just south of the city. it is a nice area. good schools. close to many hospitals, depending on how far you are willing to drive. one of my sisters lives there; two others and my parents are close. to me, it is more city-like than suburban.

without looking it up, i think that st. clair hospital is probably the closest one to mt. lebanon. however, there are many within a reasonable distance, including the major teaching facilities associated with upmc.

the scranton area is more rural. i'm not sure how many hospitals are there, but i'm pretty sure it is less than the pittsburgh area.

if it were me (and ignoring where my family is) i would pick scranton, but that is because i like more rural areas.

if i were to move to the pittsburgh area, i wouldn't pick mt. lebanon. like i said above, it is a nice place with good schools; but for the life of me i can't think of a single part of town where the neighborhoods are spread out enough for me. there are other areas that are just as nice, with just as good (or better) schools, for about the same price.

that, of course, is personal preference. (and i don't mean to insinuate that the houses are all one on top of each other, just too close for my taste. plenty of people are happy with that).

hmmm ... not sure i've helped much.

Thank you for the post CritterLover. I am leaning towards Scranton, too. Of course, I will check out both areas myself, but it is always nice to get opinions from others. I agree there seems to be more job ops in the Burgh, but I only need one, right!!?!!:D

Thank you again for the reply.

Sincerely,

Jay

you know, there are many wonderful things about pittsburgh.

numerous colleges and universities; awesome pro sports teams (well, at least two :)) and lots of cultural and educational stuff, too.

i'm not sure what all scranton has to offer with respect to that, though it is pretty close to nyc.

plus, (and a big plus professionally), there is much to be said with having many choices in nursing.

the ability to "walk with your feet" can be a very powerful bargaining tool. sure, you only need one nursing job, but what if that job puts you in an awkward position, (objectionable policy, poor working conditions, something like that). what do you do if there isn't any other hospital to go to?

though it may seem as though upmc owns everything in pittsburgh, there are other choices. how many other choices are in scranton? i'm not sure.

just something to think about.

(by the way, if you do start leaning towards pittsburgh, i've heard that upmc uses pbds.)
