Since the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA where I live is a private medical center that has built several satellite care centers in the local area as well as in other areas of Central PA, it is not threatened by layoffs, and supports Hershey Medical Center and Geisinger Medical Center, the two larger medical centers in Central PA. Instead of layoffs, Mount Nittany has experienced an increase in employment opportunities. I am grateful for living in this area where a major university is located within a rural atmosphere farms and other amenities exist. The atmosphere here is beautiful. The area in the upper right is where the University itself is located. The village is adjacent to it.

I am a soon-to-be RN moving to State College! I've accepted a position out in Williamsport in the OR, it's a bit of a drive but it's my dream job! I love the state college area, and I'm so excited to move there from Illinois!

Just looking through old posts and came across this one. I am graduating from an out of state BSN program next spring. I am originally from eastern PA and I hope to relocate to central PA for the Hershey Medical Center Nursing Residency Program. Have you ever worked at that campus? I currently work in the OR as a surgical tech while I am in school and hope to transition to a nurse in the OR. What is the salary for a graduate nurse in that area? Is your facility associated with the university? If so, do they support their nurses when it comes to continuing their education (tuition assistance, etc.)? I appreciate your help and thanks again!

Mount Nittany is affiliated with Penn State Hershey, and even has recently opened schooling in the medical field in State College. I don't know what an RN's salary is, but CNAs currently start at $13,00 an hour, plus they get paid vacation time and other benefits. I currently have a nursing assistant who works at Mount Nittany, and she loves the personal benefits. However, the hospital does have annual contract meetings with the union, and this year it wants to downgrade its medical benefit to a less costly one, and the union is fighting it.

If there is a pricedure that the medical team is unable to perform locally, the hospital has a helipad on top of the building that will transport to critical patients to Penn State Hershey, or to the Geisinger Medical Center located even closer than Hershey. That is also an excellent place. I was transported to Geisinger when I had an MI 5 years ago. The surgeon was so good at performing my procedure, she astounded the student Physicians there.

Personally, I love living in this area. It has such good healthcare, and my doctor is an exception Physician who has saved my life twice. I also live close to Mount Nittany, and have an EMS service within one fourth of a mile from where I live. How better can that be?

I had an MI in 2015. Two coronary arteries were blocked, but one was toned against another, so the Cardiologist felt it was too dangerous a procedure to be performed at Mount Nittany, so I was transported to Geisinger Medical Center where after the Physicians debated whether to perform a CABG or an Angioplasty. One surgeon felt she was able to perform the Angioplasty, so I was prepped for surgery the next morning. That surgeon was so good at performing my procedure, she astounded many medical personnel. I would recommend anyone for any serious surgical procedure at that hospital. The food is even of better quality there than any other hospital I have been in.
