Is it possible to get a job at CHOP?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

I really want to work at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I work nearby and I love the area. I'm not a nurse but I'm studying to be a nurse and I want to start at CHOP to get my foot in the door. Every nurse that I know that works at CHOP appears to be happy. It seems so hard to GET IN. Is it possible to work at CHOP?

Hey acirelynn,

Im going too!!! Unfortunately the interview process is not an indication of employment right now. I went to a job interview for a unit a few days ago and there were about 50 RNs applying for a few positions on one unit. So unfortunately there is a lot of competition. I'm currently interviewing with them but also was invited to the Pipeline interview in case I do not get the position. After the interview, you shadow then find out if you have the job :) .... Good luck at your interview!!!

Thanks for your response! I will be graduating in May and in my email they said they were inviting GNs to the pipeline interviews as well... is this process selective at all or do they do this with all applicants? Will I most likely get to shadow after this HR interview? Thanks again for your help.... just trying to decide if it's worth the 300$+ trip their or not for a 2 hour interview!!!!!!

Hey.. srry it tookme so long to respond.. I just got a puppy and he is exhausting :) ... anyway I dont remember them doing this last year when I graduated so i can't tell you if its selective or not.... However, if you tell them youre out of state or coming from a far away drive then they will let u shadow that day... Thats what this other interviewee did when I interviewed with her... You just have to let them kno you are coming from far away... good luck!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for all their amazing advice and to let you know that I am officially CHOPs newest PICU RN!!! All the hard work has paid off! thanks again for the advice and good luck to all the nurses applying at chop!!!

Hey NursingBabyJ!

I interviewed at the CHOP pipeline interviews on Friday and they want me to come back and shadow in the PICU. It was Friday, so I am waiting for the girl to respond about what days are available for me to come in. But, do you have any advice for me?? What do I do during the shadow? Just follow a nurse or do I do stuff? Ah! I am SO happy I got invited back, but really nervous! Any other advice? And do you think this means I have a good chance of getting the job? Thanks!

hey alwal,

Hope you did well on your interview! That was definitely the hardest part.. the shadow is pretty easy.Dont be nervous, you'll do fine. All you do is follow a nurse for a few hours. You dont actually participate in care. My advice would be to make sure you ask about all the questions you are unsure of about the picu. Get as much perspective as you can from the nurse you're shadowing. Also, at the end of the shadow you fill out an experience survey. Be honest and explain what you've learned and areas of improvement that you would need as an RN. Nobodys perfect and everyone has flaws. Overall, just make sure you let them know that you would be a good match for them and that they would be a good match for you. I found out right away that I got the job so hopefully it'll be the same for you! Good luck and let me know how everything goes!!

AH! Thank you so much for the info!! I will let you know!!

NursingBabyJ,

After your CHOP PICU interview you said you found out right away that you got the job! What does "right away" mean? Like, you found out before you left the interview? I had mine today. The shadowing went really well. I actually did participate in care with the nurse. I am very nervous! It was tricky to read the people I came in contact with.

Let me know!!

I shadowed on friday morning and found our saturday morning that I got the job... But its probably not like that for everyone. She told me she would make a decision within the next week so i would give it about the same time frame. How was it? Were you interacting a lot with the staff and family members? I'm sure u did fine... maybe we will orientate together!! let me know when they give you the offer letter! :D

Oy! I hope my outcome is a lot better than I feel right now! I think the shadowing was really good. I got to help the nurse a lot...actually did some charting and G-tube stuff (shh..woops) and helped with bathing/bedding stuff. I interacted with the patients, my nurse, and another nurse, and listened to rounds. I was totally not sure about the interview with the manager though. I could not read the situation at all!! She was very nice, but maybe I am over analyzing things. Hope I didn't give "cliche' answers to her "why do you want to work at CHOP?" questions!! Agh! Thanks for your reassurance though! I can't wait to hear back. Seems like it's definitely a good thing that I got this far! So you haven't started orientation at all yet?

Haha dont wrry... i totally bombed the interview with lots of umms and uhhs ... haha i always get nervous with those type of things.. but i still got hired!! I think she just liked that I had peds experience ( I do homecare right now) ..But no, I havent started orientation. It was suppose to be next week but they pushed it back til may 16. I guess she wanted me to start with the majority of the PICU hires.

Hi all :

I just had my shadow day today from 7am-1pm. This may have been previously answered, but is the offer of a shadow day indicative of their serious interest or is it more of a standard?

The day went really well, got to do patient care and get a tour of the unit, and talk with both an orientation coordinator and the nurse manager. Sounds like a good sign - anyone have any words of advice or thoughts to offer?
