Hospital Question (Childrens Hospital, Philadelphia)

  1. 0
Hey guys, I am a nursing student that will be starting my junior year of a 4 year BSN program in September. I live in the Philadelphia area and I was just wondering about Childrens Hospital (incase anyone is familiar). I have a few family members that work there that I believe will be able to help me once I graduate. I have heard good things about the hospital but it would be nice to get some true critics of this hospital.
I am also very curious on the starting salary for new grads at Childrens incase anyone knows this information.

Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

what family says, that actually works there is stronger in it's weight in gold than strangers on the internet. When the human resouce dep. calls you, you will be aware of the pay. With no exp, you have little to bargan with.

    Hi Nick,
I've heard good and bad. From my understanding, obtaining a full time position as a new grad at CHOP at the moment is very difficult. At most they are doing part time/per diem with orientation positions. I also know CHOP is known for having the lowest pay in Philly. Approx $25-26/hr, however, each floor varies, as I have been told from HR. It is expected that you work both day and night shifts. However, with CHOP's reputation and hopefully strong ties you'll be able to suceed with a good pediatric career.

When i started there 7 years ago the starting pay for a new grad was 25.25. And it was full time with benefits. And you could call HR and ask for an interview with the unit of your choice. Things have changed so much. Now all new grads have a 6 month temp position with no benefits and its part-time basis. I think this is ashame nursing students work so hard inschool and deserve to have a full time job when they are done. I have had great experiences here and learned so much. It is a great place to work but like many hospital systems, it has its issues too. Good luck.

If you're interested in peds you should also look at St. Chris. Pay is higher than at CHOP and they hire new grads as regular employees. Not sure if they still do but when I got hired they also offered a sign on bonus paid out over my first year (and I was a new grad).

Thanks alot for the opinions and honesty. I am surprised to hear these things about CHOP. I thought it was the cream of the crop in terms of Philadelphia hospitals but I am hearing very mixed opinions. Even pay seems to be lower then the rest although I hear that nurses are treated great there.

hiddencatRN, would you happen to know of St.Christophers new grad pay off the top of your head? Do you like it there?

It was 27.50 base when I started. 10% evening dif and 15% night dif. Benefits are meh, but what can ya do? I have fantastic coworkers and felt really lucky to get in to peds as a new grad.

Thank you! This is quite informative and very sad to read about CHOP, since it's my top choice and I just spent a lot of time writing essays for their application. Obviously, I'm applying elsewhere and will take anything I can get.

Hiddencat, how is safety around St. Chris's? I don't have a car, since I'm in CC, so I'd have to buy one if I were to work there. However, I haven't seen any job openings for St. Chris. Also, do you know how safe it is around the TUH-Episcopal campus? Thanks!
