I will be graduating from nursing school this spring , and I'm interested in finding a job in labor and delivery.

I feel like I keep hearing that L+D is notoriously hard to get into (I'm not a CNA either, which I hear can be helpful at getting onto the floor).

I'm also concerned that some hospitals are only hiring BSN's. Getting my foot into the door as a new nurse already seems a little scary, and with these other obstacles, my task seems increasingly daunting.

I want to continue my career towards becoming a nurse midwife, and would prefer to be in an atmosphere that is progressive and holistic (if possible).

Any advice?

Have you considered becoming a doula? Some clinical studies show that women's time spent laboring is decreased with the aid of a doula. It is very holistic, is a great way to help out in your local community, and would be great experience for someone wanting to go into L&D.

I too am a new grad (BSN) looking to go into L&D. I am also a Doula and have 6 years experience as a LPN and 13 years experience as a PCT/CNA. It has been so hard trying to find a job in L&D. The advice that I was given is to really network with others in the field, volunteer with the local birthing centers, become a member of AWHONN, attend the conferences and above all keep trying!!
