Aria School of Nursing September 2012

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hi all, I'm new to this site (just joined today). But I've been lurking for a few weeks. I'm applying for the Aria Health SON and would love to meet others who are applying for the September 2012 academic year.

I'm still a bit confused about which books we need right now and which books can wait until later in the term. I would much rather spread out the $$$ lost. I have the fundamental books and I'm going to order my med surg in Sept. Since we don't need it right away. What else did we need by the start of the term?????

Specializes in ORTHO, TRAUMA, MED-SURG, L&D, POSTPARTUM.

@Philliesgirl I'm too chicken to buy past editions. I fear I might miss the most minute detail that would hinder my learning. I MIGHT be paranoid! There are a number of nursing students on allnurses.com that used one edition older and swear they had no problems learning the material and passing with A's. The chapters usually have different page numbers. I think I read that med-surg and pharmacology books should be up to date because this information is revised often. Plus something to consider is that teachers might use the current study workbooks for test questions. This has been true for me in many of my pre-req classes.

@Awarren Here is how I sorted it out. Would ya'll think I'm crazy to know I even went to the extent of creating 7 amazon wishlists corresponding to each nursing semester's book requirements? However the booklist kinda contradicts itself by saying a book is "Required reading for all incoming students" and in another area saying it is needed Level 2 or 3. It also says some books are need for Nurs 312, but we don't have a 312 semester so I assume those books were for Nurs 311. As a disclaimer I could be wrong so check with the school to clarify.

As a side note I've read excellent comments about the Pearson Reviews and Rationales series. I'm considering purchasing the Reviews and Rationales audio disks through Vangonotes for my commute to school. Also our Fundamentals book has audio/podcast overviews of each chapter and a lot of online tools to help study @ DavisPlus - Fundamentals Of Nursing2 Volume Set), 2nd Edition. Alrighty now I'm going to end my ridiculously long post.

I also got my fundamentals book from barnes and noble, but I rented it and will purchase it at the end of the rental, so it kind of allows me to spread my money out for the time being. The APA book I already had from a previous class. And I rented the Test Success book (5th ed) from the local library so that I can read it and get an understanding of the material in it. I'm also getting the med-surg book in Sept as it's not immediately needed. But I still need to get the NCLEX review and the Thinking like a nurse.

I luckily had some leather all white shell-top addidas that I can use initially until I get some nursemates. I'm trying to limit my loans as much as possible and am trying to pay for as much as I can out of pocket.

Simplyblessed. Yeah I have some white k-swiss shoes I'll be using until I can buy the nursemates I want. Renting and buying later...that is a good way to spread out the costs. I like it.

How do you guys feel about Penn State's accreditation being in jeopardy....

@ Holly, thank you for the info! :) I love the book list breakdown!

@ Ayanna, I am definitely concerned with the Penn State accreditation situation. Ugh....

I thought Aria's accreditation was granted through its connection with Penn State, but I just checked the website Aria has its own accreditation.

*temporary sigh of relief....

Philliesgirl...thanks. ;)What psu's accreditation is on the line? Sorry I never watch the news. Dont be surpised if I show up in shorts when its snowing...cause I never know the weather forecast either! So I guess it is because of the sexual abuse incident with the coach and psu covering it up? It's crazy how much politics play into things.

Dont go crazy w/ the books. Like, i actually got that stupid "thinking like a nurse" book and tried to read it before we started. the book did nothing for me and i was disappointed that the teachers NEVER mentioned it once. *waste of my money and time

Also, the test success book, i bought that too, didnt have time to read it at all *waste of money

The American nurses association ethics book sets (3)....*waste of money. I think they took one test question from it one time. The material is so dry, that i couldnt even read it even though i actually bought these books *waste of money

The study guide books? I've got them too....used them my first semester and now they all sit and collect dust. I just dont have time for that stuff and it helps w/ definitions and stuff, but that stuff isnt on our tests...*waste

I also ordered the NCLEX book they recommended and ive barely looked at it. You guys gotta understand that once u start, your time is so limited. Im not going to say this was a waste of money because ill definately use it when i study for my boards...but you dont need it now.

What you need: Your fundamentals book, and your med surg books. We didnt start using med surg until halfway through the 2nd semester N11. You need the davis drug guide book, or anyone that u want to use that is up to date. You also need a nursing diagnosis book. Not the one they recommend unless YOU LIKE IT. You can get whatever one you want. We all bought the one they recommended and hated it and ended up spending the $60 to get another one that we love. I will find it after this post and post it for you.

Get your white shoes, get your stethoscope of choice, and cute watch that you can easily see the seconds hand and you will be good to go. I wish someone had told me about these books before i wasted my money...so i hope you listen. If not they are great dust holders
