Any nurses from PA? Looking for OB position near Philadelphia

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

There's a possibility of me relocating to PA. I'm wondering how the area is like (Philadelphia area)? Nursing? Hospitals? Any recommendations on hospitals to work at (in particular L&D, preferable birthing centers). I'm not quite sure how to transfer my RN license. Can I keep 2 RN license active from different states? Should I quite my current job before applying to RN jobs in PA? Any suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. I also heard working Philadelphia there is also a city tax that will be deducted from your pay check, is that correct?

I'm quite nervous about making this big move because I have barely have a year of experience as a new nurse (one month shy from a year). I'm not sure what to expect... there are still tons I don't know and I hope that when I land a new job that my co-workers will be as welcoming and helpful as the ones I currently have.

I work at a suburban hospital about 45 minutes from my house. When I graduated nursing school I was able to land interviews with most of the major city hospitals but never landed a position. This I attribute to the fact that my school alone graduated 500 nurses and there are about 7-10 nursing schools in a 30 mile radius. The city is saturated with nurses and the hiring is mainly for nurses with experience unless you already had a foot in the door. L&D is even harder because people don't usually leave that specialty so the turnover is very slow. I would not leave my current position until I knew for sure I would land something else. Many of my fellow graduates are still loking for positions. There are Nurses at my current hopsital who have been RN's for almost a year and still working as techs. Good luck to you. The way I landed interviews was persistance. Keep calling HR and making yourself known and beef up the resume!!

I'd also recommend obtaining your PA license, or at least a temporary practice permit, before applying. It'll show employers you are being proactive.

You can do so by applying for endorsement with temporary practice permit by completing the necessary paperwork which can be found at http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/state_board_of_nursing/12515/licensure_information/572048.

Specializes in ER/ICU/STICU.

You can keep two different licenses from different states. Unfortunately Pennsylvania is not a compact state so it's going to cost some $$$ getting your PA license. Jobs are tight around here, just like everywhere else. However the nice part about this area is there are a lot of hospitals within a 20 mile radius of the city, including a bunch in the downtown area.

I wouldn't quit your current job if it is only a possibility you will relocate. There is no law against applying for different jobs while you are still employed. My personal philosophy is to not leave one job until I have another.

Yes there is a city wage tax, but working in the city usually pays a higher salary to help offset the extra expenses of working in the city, such as the city wage tax, parking, etc.

In addition, since I don't know your background, I would recommend having your BSN or be working to obtain it if you don't already have. Almost all of the hospitals in Philadelphia are Magnet and want RN's with a BSN or currently working on it. I'm not saying they will not hire you without it, but my experience is that is they direction they are moving toward.

thanks for the info! I have my BSN and will have my 1 year experience in L&D end of October. I'm nervous about making such a big move because I currently work in a rural hospital... I don't know how the different pace will be like... and how I will adjust.

How about any birthing center? Close to Glenodom area??

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

glenolden pa is in delaware county. finding an ob position is very difficult. 19 hopitals have closed ob services in philly area since 1997. have not seen an ob position posted locally.

check:

crozer health system: crozer chester medical center and delaware county memorial hospital

main line health: riddle memorial.

main line has most ob--their other facilites are lankeanu, bryn mawr and paoli all within 30-40 minute commute.

philadelphia has six hospitals delivering babies: temple university hospital, pennsylvania hospital, albert einstein medical center, thomas jefferson university hospital, hahnemann hospital and the hospital of the university of pennsylvania.

area has only 1 birth center: [color=#6611cc]the birth center located across street from bryn mawr hospital.

Thank you so much!!

It sounds like L&D will be almost impossible to find... where should I start then? What kind of jobs can I get? I don't have any med-surg experience...just 1 year of L&D... :(
