It was nice to meet some of you at the CPR training. I must saying I'm getting a bit nervous about finding a job, even though I haven't started school yet. I hoped to work at the hospital near where I live because they're the only place that accepted ASN nurses without a year experience. I'm volunteering there this summer and hoped they would hire me as an aid while in school. Anyway, I just checked their employment listings and it appears they changed everything. You now need a BSN to be a nurse there, and a be a BSN student to work as an aid. Even the long term care facilities don't take new nurses. Yikes. Are you all concerned, too, or is it just me? I guess now's our time to start networking!
Sadly almost everywhere is passing rules that you have to have your 4yr degree to get a job. Even if you were already employed by the hospital they won't hire you without your four year first. My plan was to try and get an administrative type job at a hospital while in school and then hopefully get them to pay for my additional 2 yrs and then start working as soon as I'm finished. I plan on taking the NCLEX right after graduating from CCP just to do it but I was planning on getting my BSN regardless because no one will hire you without it now. What hospital were you hoping to work at? You can always try to apply to whatever hospital you do your clincals at...they might be more willing to hire right out of school since you trained there.

I see, that makes sense. So do we need to complete the criminal check/CPR certification and stuff BEFORE the orientation, or do we get told AT orientation when we need to do those things?

You need to show proof when you go to orientation that you completed all of it. When you get the packet in the mail it will show you how to get a criminal background check and child abuse clearance online and also where to take your drug screening.. but you have to have it done by the day of orientation. They want you to bring all of your paperwork with you to orientation to show proof. If you don't have it done you cannot proceed into the program.

    Hello everyone,

I have just recently gotten accepted for the 2012 nursing semester(literally got the letter today). I was surprised to say the least, since I got a C last semester in Chemistry.

I was actually 99% sure I wouldn't get in. Either way, it's a surprise, and congrats to everyone else that has gotten in! I plan on giving my check this week, does anyone know how the class selection/physicals and all that stuff starts?
Congrats, pazuzu!! I can relate to your chemistry surprise. I got a C- in Chemistry and still got in. This was my only C in high school, so of course I was pretty anxious before I got my letter. You can register for lecture, lab, clinical and seminar through MyCCP. All the other information should be in the info packet we're all eagerly awaiting. See you in the fall!

I was looking at Nazareth. I'm applying for a couple administrative jobs there now, as well as to volunteer. I think volunteering where you want to work would be a great way to get to know people who work there. I would also love to work for Hospice. I'm definitely planning on getting my BSN as well. I have found one place that doesn't require that their nurses have a BSN and previous experience: the Philadelphia prison system. For those who can handle it!

It looks as though both you and I have the same ideas..hehe Yeah I have been applying all over, Penn Hospital, Holy Redeemer, Jeanes, etc. I have a lot of administrative experience and sadly no one wants to hire me..lol There is a girl in my Anatomy class who's sister went through CCP's Nursing program and she did her clinicals at Holy Redeemer. She said after she was done school they hired her since that's where she was taught. I'm hoping we get that lucky. She also started right away on the maternity floor, which is exactly where I want to be, or the NICU. I always thought you would have to pay your dues on a med-surg floor or something similar first but she said they will put you where they need help at the time. So i think we may have a shot getting in somewhere that we do our clinicals unless they have a strict policy on having your BSN first. I'm crossing my fingers.

I'm starting to get freaked out that I haven't received anything about orientation yet. Its like a month away. How are we supposed to get all these checks done in a timely manner if they don't tell us anything until the last minute. grrrr

TeenBean87 I'm sorry I wasn't able to get you added to our group however, I can try to arrange another group if you are interested. One of the girls that was supposed to make it to the first class was unable to and the woman who conducts the class would be more than willing to do another one if I can get another group together. I need at least 3-4 people and we would have to arrange a meeting place. Let me know if you are interested and I can see what I can do.
Yes I would definitely be interested if you can arrange another group. Hopefully there will be 3-4 people who would want to come!

Also, did anyone start to send for their background check and child abuse clearance yet? I was thinking about it, but was going to wait until I received the orientation package in the mail.

I know, I'm getting antsy, too. They never seem to give us much advance notice for anything, and I'm going to need a couple weeks notice to get off from work for orientation! That's an uplifting story about what happened with your friend's sister.

Nobody seems to want me, either, despite administrative experience. But the good news is, after we finish one semester we can start working as CNA's. There is a form we have to fill out, the PDE-294, to challenge the CNA test. Just go to http://www.portal.state.pa.us and type PDE-294 into the search. It think it will be easier to get a job as an aid.

TeenBean, I'm going to wait until I receive the package before doing my checks. I'm almost certain they are done online and we get the results fast.
