Peds/infant stethoscope


Hi everyone! I just passed boards and started working in a Peds CVICU. The majority of our patients are infants so I have found that my new Littmann stethoscope is way to big for this teeny babies but a new chest piece is nearly as pricey as a totally new stethoscope. Does anyone have any advice on a good neonate stethoscope thats not extremely expensive? Thanks for any advice you can provide~Madampomfrey

I'd recommend spending the money on a new chest piece. You want something that will let you actually distinguish between valve noises, murmurs, breath sounds and chest tube hissing. Our unit has inexpensive stethoscopes at each bedside and they're all but useless.

I work at a Peds office I got the littman classic infant stethescope and it is really nice. I got mine on discount (because the entire nursing staff ordered one) for 75$ but they were originally running around 90$ which isnt bad for a good steth.

I have always used a Littman classic II Pedi stethescope. The Nursery I worked in had inant and pedi sizes, but unless extremely preterm, the pedi scope was always sized ok, In fact, our neonatologists used the pedi instead of infant scopes. Either way, Littman in my experience has been very durable and with great sound quality. They aren't the cheapest you could find, but is an investment that will last years.(4 years on mine so far).

Littman is a good investment. Just make sure you watch it like a hawk. Other people like to procure Litmmans without the bother of paying for one.

We actually had Neonatologists walk off with the Littmans we kept at cribside in the nursery I worked at....They all had their own and always returned them. The one doc returned 6 of them one time. I do know that they like to walk, so do watch a good stethescope like a hawk....Really good advice.

Get your steth engraved. It still might walk off, but if the person who walked away with it has a conscience, you're more likely to get it back than if it is just an "anonymous" scope that belongs to no one in particular.

Mine is breast-cancer-awareness pink and has a nametag with a flying pink pig on it. It always comes home.
