pediatric nursing responsibilities

  1. I just wanted to ask nurses out there that are currently in pediatrics to give me just an overview of what exactly the job entails. I want to become a nurse specifically so I can help children. I just want to make sure this is the right job for me as I do not want to spend time and money to work so hard only to find out I am not cut out for it. Any advice or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

I am almost sure that something w/the proper experience will chime in soon. Can't help but comment though....

I always thought that I wanted to go into Psych nursing. When the rotation for psych came along I chose to go w/the group that was doing clinicals at the state mental hospital. I wanted to get the "real" experience! I am glad I did. I am very happy in the SICU and try my darnest to steer away from any psych patients that may come my way, but am perfectly able to treat those that I do end up being asigned to.

My suggestion is to keep an open mind. You will go through many a rotation and will get a glimpse of what many specialties are about.

    Good luck!

Almost any procedure I have performed on an adult I have also performed on a child. In general Peds requires a good working knowledge in growth and developement, childhood diseases & illnesses and the ability to do good patient and parent teaching.

Something to keep in mind is that Peds acute and well care (office or clinic) are two very different worlds, the info as to what "it" is like depends on what you are planning to do.
