Got a job as a Peds. nurse.... need overview please!

by Epona

Hello fellow Peds. nurses! I am a new RN grad. and just got a peds. job in an office. I really like it. I really do! I wanted to ask you all.... I took Peds. in school, but I am not really up to speed on the area of Peds. nursing. It was a while ago when I took Peds. Adult medicine I am on top of, but not the Peds.

Is there a good simple, yet explanatory book I could buy to read over in a few weeks that will give me a good general overview?? Someone mentioned earlier a book that I have seen the doc. reading and it looks 'medical' and quite in-depth. I need something simple and quick to get up to speed. Anyone know of a good Peds. book that will give me a good overview and get me up to speed? Like, in the first 6 months of life, the baby will be on BLANK formula and will exhibit the BLANK grasp and will show the following motor skills, etc. Also... immunization info. would be good too. The parents ask me a lot about immunizations and I really don't know much about this. I am just not versed enough on Peds. I am a newbie here! Help please!!

THANKS VERY MUCH!!!

It was called Harriett Lane... that book is over 700 pages. I was looking for something a little more simple and condensed. Thanks! Epona

How about Pediatric Nursing Made Incredibly Easy and Pediatric Facts Made Incredibly Easy? You can have both of them from Amazon for less than $50.

I just started a job as a new grad in a pedi office. They gave me a packet ahead of time on all the info I needed to know. As far as immunizations each office differs a bit. I bought pedi facts incredibily quick which helped alot on development and such.

Mosby's Pediatric Nursing Reference, small, straight to the point book (my peds instructor always carried it with her!)

Totally agree with all of the responses. I think I have all of those.
BTW...the Harriet Lane is "THE" reference of the peds floor.

Good Luck.

Hi there! I would strongly recommend the list of texts that are on the Pediatric Certification Board of Nursing website (www.pcnb.org). I just finished the prep for the national peds cert exam and all of the stuff they recommended was perfect. Lots of developmental info and procedural info. I have been a peds icu/hospice nurse for my whole 25+ year career and I found stuff that I had forgotten or didn't ever know. Good luck, JeanMarie
