by SusGob711 Nov 26, '12I am a senior nursing student working at a mid-sized teaching hospital in Ohio. As I search for jobs, I'm a little surprised to hear many of our nurses and docs encouraging me to seek employment elsewhere. Multiple people have told me I need to get my first job at a bigger, more renowned teaching facility where I'll get the best experience and get the best training. Several of our docs have suggested Children's of Michigan but unfortunately I missed their residency deadline (Nov 17!!!! ugh!).
Honestly I'm a little disheartened but I also want to work somewhere I'll have the best learning opportunities. That said, can anyone suggest a facility that is especially new grad friendly (definitely prefer peds)? Location is not an issue as I am willing to relocate.

Nov 26, '12 by wish_me_luckBig cities, but even just finding a level 1 hospital is fine. When I read this, I found it slightly disheartening that nurses and doctors are encouraging you to look elsewhere from your current facility, especially if it is a teaching hospital. -

Nov 27, '12 by Good Morning, GilSt Jude in Memphis, TN is obviously a well-renowned hospital, but I've heard through the grapevine their burn-out rate is pretty high, which stands to reason. I believe they hire new grads, as well.
There are a few great children's hospitals in this country, though you probably want to talk with nurses who work there to see what it's like from a nursing standpoint, especially if you're going to relocate. -

Nov 27, '12 by ChristineNI would look in Pennsylvania. Children's Hosiptal in Philly has been ranked #1 year after year. I know several nurses that work there and they love it, but do tell me that there is an expectation in staff to be involved in committees, research always going on, etc.
Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, is also a top 10 ranked hospital, and they also just built a brand new hospital in the last couple years.
Both of the two are Level 1 trauma centers, do transplants, etc. -
Nov 27, '12 by hiddencatRNSt Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philly also hires new grads. They have the region's only pediatric burn center. They do a lot of community outreach locally too. -

Also consider the one at Stanford. Expensive place to live, though. - Nov 27, '12 by heroldbeJust curious but what hospital are you employed at? I'm also a nursing student in ohio and I'm wondering why cincinnati children's or Miami valley wasn't recommended since its a level 1?
