Shift Differentials

I had a quick question regarding shift differential. Lets say overnight shift diff is $1.75 and weekend shift diff is $1.25, will I get paid an extra $3.00 working overnight on weekends or will I just be paid the highest shift diff which is $1.75? Please let me know your experience with this.

In places that do it this way typically both apply, in my experience. Every employer is different with how they do things though- best to check with them.

Where I work our hospital shifts are divide from 7A-3P, 3P-11P, and 11P-7A, but we only have two shifts in the ER 7A-7p and 7P-7A. So the first shift gets 4 hours of 2nd shift and the second shift gets 4 hours of 2nd shift and 8 hours of 3rd shift. For me as a Medic 2nd shift is $1.64/hr and 3rd is $2.46/hr and $0.82/hr for weekend shifts. We also get a shift bonus of $6/hr if we pick up any extra shifts. We work 3 12's a week for full time. Also we get OT for anything over 40. So if you pick up and extra shift you get a shift bonus plus OT.

You get all the differentials that apply for that shift! Weekend night shift is the bomb for pay!

You should get both.

Hi! I'm new to this.. So I was just wondering. When you get hired at a hospital and they give you a rate, that's your base pay right? And so if I worked 7p-7a.. I should be getting a shift differential. But it is not my bad pay? Does that make sense?

Yes that is correct! Your shift diff is added to your base pay. Night diffs are usually the highest.

Thank you so much! I wasn't aware of that. :)

That is a sweat deal there. I get nothing for extra shifts (aside from the OT after 40 hrs)

Both apply, however in my area it's onl 1 dollar extra per hour on nights and .45 for the weekends regardless of ****. I think 2nd shift is .75 extra.

It's pretty nice. If I pick up an extra shift it is an automatic $72 extra plus OT for 8 hours of it. Our nurses in the er get $10/hr for picking up extra shifts. I know at one point during Christmas I was close to $30-40/hr due to Base Rate, Extra Shift, Holiday Pay, Weekend Pay, and Shift Differential. It was a very good day.
