I am opting not to get the flu shot. I am wearing a mask (per hospital policy) instead of the vaccine. It will help protect from other flu strains not in the vaccine and other seasonal illnesses.

Nothing is full proof and some things for me are not worth the risk.

In my hospital, there are mandatory flu shots. However, if you sign the waiver, end up getting the flu, and take sick time, you will not be paid for that time off. I always take the vaccine, since I have Sickle Cell, but I think it is ridiculous to force people to take the vaccine. I read that the vaccine varies in effectiveness from year to year and this is why I believe it should be someone's choice and not mandatory. One person I work with never took the vaccine, but did take it this year. She ended up very sick a few days after and had to take a few days off. Then she thought she was getting better and became worse and ended up take off another couple of days. Many of the other people I work with became sick after taking the flu vaccine and then were working around the patients, which is not the smartest thing to do.

There is another aspect of this that is not being discussed. They are required to where buttons stating the fact that they did or did not get the flu vaccine. Isn't this a violation of their HIPPA rights?

I know where I am at, they've stopped testing for H1N1...so determining the actual numbers is impossible. X% out for the flu doesn't really mean anything. A 24/hr stomach bug can present itself with the same s/s. Its really hard to tell what exactly some people are suffering from.

Funny that people are rushing to the ED with the flu when the CDC is recommending them stay home. I absolutely blame the media for the frenzy.

This is what I don't get. Why did they stop testing? If we're so paranoid about this pandemic, isn't it important to know real numbers instead of everyone walking around saying they got told they have h1n1? If we're so worried about rationing masks, shouldn't we know who nurses actually need to be wearing a mask around? If we're so worried about Tamiflu resistance, why is everyone with a runny nose being told they have h1n1 and getting put on Tamiflu?

It doesn't make sense how we can just stop keeping count.

I wish my facility was mandating the flu shot (seasonal and H1N1); then employees who wanted one might have a fighting chance of getting one.

I work in long-term care. My job, which is installing new carpeting, furniture, and wi-fi, may not have the seasonal flu shot available for employees. If they do, they may charge us for it. I can understand charging kitchen and office staff, but nurses and caregivers?!

In response to the OP, I am just in school, but the school is requiring both the seasonal and the H1N1 vaccinations. We can sign a waiver if we want, but then we will have to wear a mask all day in clinicals. We will only be allowed to remove it for lunch. I am opposed to mandatory vaccinations, but I understand and support the reasoning behind it, and had my first flu shot ever this fall. I will also get the H1N1 vaccination, but I am a little afraid of that one.

My facility is mandating both vaccines. There are 3 reasons you dont get it 1) is medical (allergic to eggs, hx of gilliaine barre) 2) religous reasons and I forget the 3rd but if you have these accomodations you get to wear a mask every minute you are on hospital property except your 30 minute lunch break...otherwise end result you get terminated. I dont agree either but jobs are hard to find right now and some battles arent worth fighting at this moment so I got both of mine.
