New Flu Virus raises fear of pandemic

The flu deaths in Mexico raise fears of global pandemic. This is a new flu virus that is not covered by the flu shot of this year and could take months to develop a vaccine for. This is very frightening. Mexico has shut down their museums,schools,libraries and theatres.

Indigogirl! Where are you? This seems to be a circumstance you have experience in. I, for one, am very intriged by this unfolding story. As a nurse w/ 29 years behiind her, I'm looking for something new and different to deal with. What are you able to come up with?

Thank you indigo girl. Many are watching this situation unfold.
I feel rather frustrated right now. Everyone knows a potential pandemic could occur at any time. My facility just recently laid off several workers, one of which was our Infection Control Nurse!

The Infection Control nurse? That figures.

I think that it is important to stay up to date. Be calm, and rational, and think through what you are hearing and seeing in the media.

As for the cases in New York, it is good to remember that many organisms can and do cause flu like illnesses that are much more likely than Swine Flu. Wait and see what they find out. Our public health system will be under the spot light with all of this activity. They have done a great job so far with the early surveillance work in the California and Texas cases. I hope to see an infusion of funding for them to do even better in the future.

UPDATE - I just read on another forum about an intervew with some of those New York students, but do not have a media link. Apparently, some of the kids had been to Mexico recently, and if that is true than yes, it could be Swine Flu, I guess.

Here is the updated MMWR for today from the CDC. Pretty fast for them, I'd say.

Millions of people across the United Stated today have become infected with hysteria. Hysteria is very highly contagious, and is caused by the hype virus. The hype virus is spread by the media. To avoid becoming infected, don't even believe anything that comes out of those talking heads on the television. Turn that mess off, and go out for some air. (Don't forget your mask.)
