I know! It's not like I'm refusing the seasonal flu vaccine or I am refusing the vaccine because I don't understand the benefits. I'm fullly aware of both the benefits and the risks. I do my research. I shouldn't be required to be education on the flu and the vaccine just because I choose not to participate in a brand new vaccine. I also don't want to wear a mask 12.5 hours a day.

Do I suck it up and attend the flu education and wear the mask? Do I get the vaccine and quit seeing my grandmother? Do I find another job? Hard to move on to a new job when I'm leaving the area to start a new job and nursing school in May. Plus, I need continuous coverage of medical insurance and the bills need paid!

Smallpox is the only disease that has been completely eradicated. There is no one around that can spread that diasese, therefore we are not immunized against it anymore. It does exist in a few labs and could possible be used a a bio weapon. Remember just a few years ago the gov't discussing re-vaxing? I believe the military has started giving it again. They stopped a few years after I left the military, but started up after the bio scare.

The rest of the diseases still exist and indeed could be spread to the US. That is why we still vaccinate against them. I think polio might be getting close to being eradicated...maybe around 1k cases worldwide last year.


To the op,
I have already got the flu vaccine and so did my kids. I will probably have to get the H1N1 since it will be required for nursing school. I'm on the fence about getting it for my kids - but I will discuss that with my ped.

Flu is not measles. Flu mutates contantly to outwit the immune system so there is no permanent immunity. Measles does not. Do you really believe that you cannot get the flu more than once? This pediatrician tested positive twice, several months apart. And, that was confirmed swine flu, twice, not seasonal flu.

It takes some time to develop the full antibody protection, and if you are exposed to the virus before that happens, you may get sick. But, even though not 100% protected yet, your kids might develop enough antibodies to protect them from dying, though they might still get sick, and that really is the point of vaccination.

You might be able to detect antibodies in 8-10 days, but maximum response will take about 3 weeks. That's why detection of a prior infection uses antisera collected 3 weeks after onset, and why boosters are given 3 weeks after first shot. However, an infection shortly after a vaccine might make the infection worse initially because the immune system is battling the vaccine, and could be more easily overwhelmed by a new infection. Full protection is defined by peak antibody levels, and antibody levels at 8-10 days is far from a peak level.

I'm in nursing school and we are mandated to have both H1N1 and the seasonal by Dec. 1st. It's either get the shot or your out of nursing school. Wasn't planning on getting either but not really left an option at this point.

Except that most vaccines don't contain mercury anymore (in spite of there not being conclusive evidence that it caused a problem in the minuscule does that are in vaccines). Even two of the three versions available of the flu and H1N1 vaccines come mercury free.

So, while I wouldn't say hysterical....I'd definitely say reactionary.

You're question re: why we don't vaccinate for smallpox has already been answered.

I think that we, as a culture, have forgotten how many kids were disabled or died from the diseases we vaccinate to prevent.

I'm curious....if you wouldn't refuse the seasonal flu vaccine, why on earth would you refuse the H1N1. They're the same shot, with the exception that the seasonal shot has three dead virus particles, whereas the H1N1 only has one.

There's other toxins, not to mention aborted fetal tissue and other mammal products they use to grow the vaccines in. So for me...mercury isn't my only worry. Here's how they make the vaccine:

Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine, an inactivated influenza virus vaccine, for intramuscular use, is prepared from influenza viruses propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The virus-containing allantoic fluid is harvested and inactivated in formaldehyde. Influenza virus is concentrated and purified in a linear sucrose density gradient solution using a continuous flow centrifuge. The virus is then chemically disrupted using a non-ionic surfactant, polyethylene glycol p-isooctylphenyl ether (Triton® X-100), producing a “split virus”. The split virus is further purified and then suspended in sodium phosphate-buffered isotonic sodium chloride solution.


So, unless the "aborted fetal tissue" is the chicken eggs....I'm not sure where you got your information from. Oh and notice the complete lack of any kind of "mammal products."

The virus is inactivated in formaldehyde....but is then separated from that solution.

If its your choice to get the H1N1 vaccination then it was your decission. However, the vaccinations should never be mandatory because everyone including healthcare workers should have the option to choose.

I heard the other day that the reason that the H1N1 vaccine is in such short supply is because the unicorn eggs they grow it in are in short supply with that new mall being built on their nesting grounds in never never land.
