Pain mgmt is part of palliative care

  1. Just curious: Why are there separate pain mgmt and hospice nursing specialties on this board, but no general palliative care? They are both part of palliative care. Thank you.

Many specialties of nursing overlap; pain management isn't limited to palliative care. Perhaps that influenced the decision for multiple specialty forums.

Which came first, hospice care or palliative care, as specialties?

I believe hospice, in terms of being a formal speciality, when it was founded by Dame Cecily Saunders in the 1950s (worked hospice for over 5 years so I know some of the history). Palliative care was a PART of hospice. But both have been informally practice since the dawn of humanity, trying to comfort the sick and hurting as well as the dying, so in that sense they would come at the same time I suppose.
