IV Fluids/Pumps

  1. I recently got a post in PACU. Having worked in the floor where we use IV pumps, i dont feel comfortable not using the pumps for IVFs, unless they are vanc, and some other specified fluids. I was told it is being charged (IV pump) to the pts. Is it the same in your facility? Thanks.

I too would want a pump for liter IVF bags, and anything else that needs a timed delivery. Vancomycin should always be put on a pump to avoid Red neck or Red man syndrome. Other IV medications that require a timed delivery, like Levaquin IV, should also be used with a pump. Now if I were infusing a medication like Ancef, I would have no problem counting drops with its administration.
    Hope this helps.
