Drexel ACE Supplies

I will be attending 's ACE program for fall 2011. I haven't heard anything about orientation yet, but I am really excited to get started. I am curious to hear from people who have graduated or are currently in the program about what sort of supplies we need?

I read somewhere that we need yellow and blue scrubs for clinical, and I assume we will need other typical nursing school supplies like a stethoscope. Are there any supplies that the school suggests that you do not recommend purchasing? Are there any supplies that you find to be really important and would be worth spending a little more money to get better quality?

Also, for textbooks, at the information session we were told that textbooks were going to be on an ipod that is included our tuition. I was curious if the textbooks are already downloaded for us or do we need to pay to download the textbooks onto the ipod? They mentioned the software being loaded on the ipod but I was not sure if this meant that the textbooks were already on there or if it was just software to help us download the books.

Thanks so much for any help!

Orientation is usually a week before classes start, and they'll send you out the list of supplies as well as your checklist closer to the start of the program. I don't think we had info about background checks and uniforms and all of that until the summer before we started.

Things can change, so I would just relax and enjoy the free time you have left instead of trying to prepare based on a list of requirements that might go through major changes before going out to your class.

I was not planning on buying anything yet, I was just curious about how much I should expect to be buying, and what current students recommend.

The next few months are going to fly by, so enjoying my free time now is a great suggestion! Thanks hiddencat!

The scrub uniforms are bought from Central Uniforms. I can't remember how much they were but I don't think they were that bad. Shoes are white with leather uppers but I never saw that strictly enforced (lots of guys wore regular mostly white sneakers with cloth uppers). The new class that started had to buy the ebook pack but the iPod is included in tuition. I'm not sure how much the ebooks were but they had to buy a package and couldn't pick and choose and I think it was $$$. The new class were given Littman stethoscopes too (we got stethoscopes in the kits they gave us but they weren't as nice as littmans!).

DO NOT BUY THE CLICKER. Lol, I almost forgot about that. Hold out on that- they swore up and down that we absolutely needed it for interactive powerpoints and then we used it about 5 times.

If you go on facebook, there are groups for the current two classes that you might get more updated info from. They really do change things around in the program- the booklist I bought from was different from the class two cohorts ahead of me, and not going to clinical the night before was a really recent change too, so just keep in mind that things will probably be a little different for you too. They just revamped the first quarter curriculum, took out the free standing ethics classes and added pathophysiology, for example.

I am starting the ACE program at the end of this month. Our ebook package is close to $1600, but if you buy all the books as a bundle you get a 35% discount. They ended up costing close to $1200. There also is a recommended study guide package for another $230, but I am holding off on purchasing that for now.

The uniform cost me about 140 for 2 sets of scrubs, the lab coat, and ID. I also got the Greys Anatomy scrubs which were a little more expensive, but definitely very comfortable.

Hiddencat- Thanks for the tip on the clicker. I will definitely hold out on that purchase.

Thank you so much! I am in one of the facebook groups, and there are some good tips on there, but not too much about supplies, so your info is good to hear.

Hiddencat- what is this clicker? haha. I start classes on Monday and almost every syllabus says we need the clicker for the 1st week of classes. I think I am going to hold off on getting it though.

Any advice for getting through my 1st quarter? Im starting to get really nervous haha

The clicker is an interactive tool that allows a teacher to pose a question in a powerpoint format and it allows you to choose the correct response. It's good because it allows the instructor to see if students are grasping the content. But truthfully speaking I'm in the 3rd quarter and I have yet to buy the clicker, so unless they intend to incorporate the clicker into the grading system, I would hold off on buying it.
