Questions for orthopaedic nurses

Hi all,
i'm a new graduated nurses and i'm now working in a urology ward. I have a patient suffered from Ca prostate with bone metastasis. And doctors have order CT neck and confirmed that there is multiple bone metastasis from T1 to C2 with displaced fracture of C2. And doctors have requested head collar and SOMI brace for immobilization of the neck. Since i am working in urology ward, i just know little about orthropaedics and i have the following questions.

Some more background information of the case:
-conscious, GCS 15/15
-full power upper and lower limbs
-no loss of anal tone
-vital signs and SaO2 stable

q1.what is the observation of this case?
q2.what would be the complication of C2 fracture? Will it affect the respiratory function?
q3.how long will the patient wear the head collar and SOMI brace for?

Many thanks!

I agree. C2 is very tenuous. If the body collapses that is not good.

A really good source is the Wheeless Textbook of Orthopaedics http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/2136
