New RN going into Ortho/Neuro

Specialties Orthopaedic

Hello everyone,

Well, I start my new job tomorrow. I will be working on the ortho/neuro floor. YAH! I am excited to start this new journey in my nursing career! I was working on the nicu floor as my first RN job for about 3 months. I felt that nicu wasn't the place for me at this time in my nursing career. Especially being a new RN. I had two preceptors and both of them seemed to be okay, but they kept saying "your lacking your critical thinking skills" I really felt bummed about all of this, but the hospital said they could transfer me into a different unit if I would like to. I took the opportunity and sucked it up and took the ortho/neuro floor. I am hoping and praying that my preceptor is kind, patient, and will work with me. This is all new to me. I may just enjoy the ortho/neuro floor and not even think back about the nicu floor. Sorry, still kindof upset about all of this. thanks for listening :)!

I worked in a NH for 3 years before finally getting my first job in the hospital. It happened to be on the Ortho/Joint Replacement floor. While we don't have a lot of neuro, I'm finding that i really enjoy Ortho. It's definitely an interesting specialty and you'll learn A LOT about pain management as well as the musculoskeletal system. It's definitely labor intensive (I would imagine with neuro especially), so protect your back! Lots of lifting and moving patients who can't move for themselves!

Hope you enjoy your new job!

I just got hired as a GN on an Ortho floor and start in a few weeks. I can't wait!! Good luck =)

Any update on how ortho/neuro went for you?
