breakdown from aspen cervical collar

Our hospital has recently become a neuro-trauma facility and my floor is the NT step-down floor from the ICU. Most of the pt's we're getting are in Aspen collars and we're starting to notice breakdown under the collars, some of it is from moisture/sweat but some it from how the pt's are twisting around and getting the collars on bony collar blades.
Just wondering if anybody else has ever seen this? Any suggestions? I'm supposed to be coming up with a new protocol for taking the collar off and cleaning Q shift but need some suggestions.
I'm going to do another thread about this, but we're also having a new issue with pressure ulcers in the occipital area from where pt's are aggitated and moving their heads around. This a new issue that we're trying to find a solution for. Suggestions?
