appropiate pain therapy for elderly women suffering hip fractures.

by keba

what guidelines should one follow where analgesia is to be administered to elderly women having had hip replacement surgery? i am concerned about certain side effects of some commonly used analgesia particularly that of increased gastric discomfort and depressed respiration. I would like some suggestions from persons who have worked in the ortho department or is currently working in that field.

Continuous narcotic/marcaine epidural for 1st 24 h then vicodin or even darvocet. You do have to watch the amount of Tylenol closely in those.

I had one lady who had been an addict in her earlier years who chose to have a marcaine epidural and then nothing stronger than Motrin.
