Relocating to Portland?

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hello all,

I'm currently a Michigan resident with 1 year's experience in medical/oncology with telemetry. My husband and I are considering relocating to the Portland area. What is the job market like in the area? I've been looking at Providence's, Legacy's, Kaiser's, and OHSU(?)'s sites for job postings. THere seems to be a decent amount of postings at each site. Any recommendations?

Not an RN yet. Just finishing up the first year of a BSN program, but the job market in Portland was pretty rough a few years ago. It seems like it is picking up again. I know many of the nurses I have been doing clinicals with are relatively new hires. Mainly new grads were having a tough time finding employment, and that still is the case I think. Since you have experience you're already ahead of the curve. Kaiser is opening a brand new facility soon, so that will create many new positions as well. My instructors at OHSU are predicting that the job market is on the verge of swinging back around to create another shortage. You should totally move to Portland though. It's an absolutely fantastic town. Cheers!

Swinging back around to create another shortage...of jobs or nurses?

My instructors swear another nurse shortage is coming, and I know OHSU grads are having good success finding jobs. From what I hear the market is getting better lately. granted I'm not looking yet though, so I don't know for sure.

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed. This could all be for naught anyways, my husband has to find a job there first.
