OHSU and other PDX area applicants for 2009

U.S.A. Oregon

I wanted to start a thread for those who are starting to apply to the local Portland nursing schools for 2009. Maybe state what school(s) you will be applying to and where you are in your process. I'm applying at OHSU OCNE and PCC. No need to state GPA or points or anything. I just mailed off my app to OHSU the other day, but still need to do my proctored essay. I sent the school the information for my proctor but have not heard anything yet. PCC will have apps available in December, so now I'm waiting for that. Good luck to everyone!

The question is very standard. Why you want to be a nurse, etc. Nothing to trip you up, they only do it proctored to be sure you wrote it.

Specializes in Ortho, Patient Educator, Neuro, Med-Surg.

We had several questions for my program. They were questions like what you would expect during a job interview. I am sure that each program changes them every year, making sure that there are not some applicants who know and others who do not.

They want the answers to be fresh, honest and thought provoking, but absolutely NOT rehersed.

Like the last poster stated, nothing to trip you up. There are no right or wrong answers...its not a test. Its a process to give insight into who you are, your experiences, and your thoughts/views on a situation/sceneros.

Which is why, I think you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who will tell you exactly what last year's questions are. You will do fine. Prep like you would for a job interview and you will do just fine. Remember, its NOT a test.

That's what I figured, thank you!

Has anyone heard about AccBaccDNP program decisions yet? I interviewed in late January and I have yet to hear.

I interviewed for the AccBacc to Masters in late January, and hadn't heard anything yet -- so I broke down and called this morning. I spoke with Tami in the admissions office, who said that they *hope* to mail the letters (paper letters!) by the end of next week. Which is more or less killing me, since I was hoping to hear this week based on something one of my interviewers had said. Which program are you applying to?

I am applying to DNP midwifery program. Thanks for the info. I am assuming with your LCSW background that you applied to the psych program. Is that right? Are you going for a masters or a DNP?

Actually, no -- though it's a logical conclusion. I'm applying for midwifery as well, and am very excited about the career change! I applied to the masters and am now kind of wishing I'd applied to the DNP...I do plan to go back to get one, but at 40 and with a partner and young child, 3 years of school and debt was about all I felt okay committing to. OHSU is far and away my first choice -- we love Portland, and I had a really nice (though brief) trip up for my interview. We'd be relocating from northern CA, so it would also be a much easier move than some other places. Where do you live? Did you apply anywhere else? I applied and didn't get into the Yale program, have been accepted at Johns Hopkins, and am waiting to hear about the accelerated BSN at UC Denver.

I am in Utah. I applied to a couple of other places too, but OHSU is my very first choice. Portland is a good spot. What do you think about the chances for out of state applicants. Is there an in state preference?

I actually asked about that in my interview. I had heard some encouraging numbers by way of the rumor mill (can't remember now what they were; a certain %age of out of state folks and a certain %age of people with previous masters' degrees). The faculty member I asked did not give me numbers, but did intimate that being from out of state wasn't apt to hurt the right candidates...

Thanks for all of your clarification. I really appreciate it. Good luck in the coming weeks. Let me know what happens.

No worries-- I was glad to see another OHSU AccBacc to something applicant on here. Good luck to you, too!

I received a phone call today with my acceptance offer to OHSU AccBach to Masters. I didn't know they were going to do phone calls - so if you get a call from a phone number you don't know - answer it!! They probably want to give you the good news. What is everyone's thoughts about OHSU? I've heard it's a great program but haven't really gotten to talk to any current students about their experiences. There is not much discussion on here about this program - so let's get it started!!
