You know, I often wonder what kind of effect the tort cap loss has on all students of OHSU. Now that OHSU can now be sued for any amount of money until a new tort cap is put in place, it makes me wonder if any kind of a drawback on the amount of hands-on work for students occured due to fear of lawsuits? I could be completely wrong about this, students may not have much hands-on clinical experience to start with due a lack of experience. I just wonder if there is any other affect on students besides tuition increases and a decrease in the med school class size.

I don't think it will have any effect on clinicals. For one thing, OHSU students are at many different settings, not just OHSU (just like there are students from other programs at OHSU). As student, you are not liable, nor is it likely you are going to be in a situation (right away that is) where you can cause harm. I think the biggest impact (besides tuition increases) for nursing students is going to be a further cutback on support staff, which is hard on all faculty and that sometimes trickles down to impact students. Where I see a big impact is research, b/c now they will not support any non-funded research -- gonna be a problem down the road if people don't have protected time to prepare proposals--will effect the money ultimately that they can bring in, and will mean that we will not attract people who otherwise would want to work here. OTOH, they now think that the cost is going to be closer to $20mil more/year rather than $30, so maybe things won't be as dire. But there's always change, and we have some big ones coming: New Dean, new person in charge of research (who has also taken over the PhD program), other personnel changes, new campus...what I found helped me was to find out who knows what, and be proactive in getting information, then make sure you share it with your classmates. Information is riches!

Well congrats to you! Holy cow, you were accepted to 3 schools??? You must have a gold plated resume. I have friends with straight A's who've applied 3 times and never been accepted anywhere yet!

Anyways, I just graduated from Linfield and if I could do it over again I would go to OHSU simply because the tuition is so much more reasonable. It will take me at least 6 years to pay off my loans of over 60k from Linfield. Granted, I didn't work while in RN school and racked up a lot of loan debt. But linfield is WAY overpriced. If money isn't an issue, Linfield is a great program.

PS - It's great to be a nurse, I work full time in a clinic 4 10hr shifts M-F weekdays only and am making just under 60k/yr!!! :yeah:

Good luck!!!

Hello all. This is my first post so please bear with me.

Over the last two years doing prereqs, my ultimate goal was always OHSU. I only applied to other schools so I would have a back-up if necessary. Well I got into both OHSU and Linfield (I actually got into UP as well but decided to pass) and now I am completely conflicted as to which program to attend. I have gotten some good feedback from both but a friend recommended this site so I thought I would give it a try. Just to clarify I am talking about the regular BSN programs.

I really would love some input, good and bad, about anyone's experience in either program. I am aware of the obvious such as length of program, etc. I am a single mother and want to be sure I make the best choice. I am extremely thankful to have such a choice and know I will be happy either way but would appreciate some additional info.

Thanks!

I know this may not be the best defining criteria for choosing schools, but you might want to find out what the passing rate (for the licensing exam) is for the two schools- just one way to gauge how well you will be prepared for the "real world". I wish you the best whichever one you choose. I am thrilled to hear that so many are attempting to enter nursing-Oregon is facing such a dramatic shortage that will be worse in the coming years.:nurse:

I actually start in February which is a good thing for me because the spring cohort does not attend summer sessions so I would graduate at the same time from either school. As a single mom to a three year old, having the summers off is really important. So, I am sure we will meet but will not be in the same class. Good luck to you in the fall!

I have books for your first term, if you are interested in buying them - great condition!

I will be using scholarship money to pay for books and I am not sure when financial aid disbursement is, but I am sure it is probably closer to February so I wouldn't be able to purchase anything until then.

Hey there, congrats on getting accepted to all three schools, that is seriously hard to do. I'm not very well versed in Linfield's program, but I do know that OHSU's nursing school is ranked number 7 out of 350 schools. That's saying something.

Oh I forgot, I'm applying for OHSU, U of P, and PCC this coming year, and am freaking out about not getting accepted anywhere, so I had a few questions for you:

Where did you take your prerequisites?

You don't have to share, but what was your GPA?

Do you have any prior certificates or work experience?

Do you have any advice to give on getting into OHSU?

Hi Ash,

Thanks on the congrats. I did feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to choose between three such excellent programs. I did decide on Linfield and just completed my first term and I am extremely happy with my choice. I love the school and their program and I look forward to completing my degree in 2011. I do know I would have been just as happy at OHSU or UofP.

To answer your questions, I did all of my prereqs at PCC Sylvania. I did not have any prior health care experience but I did have a 4.0 GPA.

My advice to you is to look at anything that you can improve over the next year and try again. If any of your science prereqs have lower grades, you may consider retaking them as I am pretty sure that is what's most important to all the schools as far as GPA goes. Also, if you do not have any prior health care experience, you may want to consider volunteering at a hospital or other health care related organization. I do not have specific advice on getting into OHSU other than making sure you know why you want to go to nursing school, what you plan to do with nursing, and what strengths you have that will positively contribute to your program and nursing itself. Having those goals and values clearly defined in your head will help you tremendously when writing the proctored essay.

I hope I have been of some help. Keep at it, I know it is not easy but perseverance is key to not only getting into a program, but surviving one. Best of luck to you:)
