Ohsu - Ocne/bsn

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Well my letter from OHSU finally came. I have been put on the alternate list. I guess that is better than getting a rejection letter but I have no idea what my chances of being moved up to being accepted are. I am just wondering if there are any other prospective or even current OHSU students out there who know what my chances are. Are there any of you who got an acceptance letter but are planning on not attending OHSU? (that would definitely increase my chances of getting in.)

I have specified that OHSU's new program out at Western Oregon University in Monmouth is my first pick, as I am from Salem, but I have also checked that I would consider the Portland campus as well...

I have also applied at Chemeketa Community College (ADN program) but will probably not hear back until the end of June.

I am just making myself a bit crazy trying to plan for the fall without really knowing what my life will look like then...

WOW if that's true, I might never get it... I got all Bs in my A&P classes and would rather do a lot of things than take them again. Does the OHSU OCNE program look at the overall GPA or just for the pre-reqs? That's one school I applied to and I would love to get in....

Honestly, they are expecting to see A's in the A&P classes. I mean they are the 'core' of the prereq classes. The overall GPA certainly comes into play. For instance, if you got all A's but one B in perhaps 'Writing 121' I think they'll slide on that, but not for a core class. I'm not applying to OHSU, even though I've hit their numbers. I would rather go to PCC or CCC, knock out the same classes at a lower price, then bridge into OHSU. I'm not going to pay 3x as much for the same class.

I don't think you need all A's, but the higher your GPA, the better. I know someone who got into Linfield last year with a 3.4. Also, I talked to the head of admissions for the nursing program and OHSU last week and the average accepted GPA last year for the portland campus was a 3.78. I only have a 3.73, but I'm still planning to apply. You never know till you try! Oh and CCC gives so many discretionary points to their students that it's pretty much a waist of time and money if you didn't take most of you pre reqs there.

I think the competition at the community college level is more intense than at the private school level simply because of the huge difference in cost. It is sort of funny to see all of us freaking out, me included, about how good our grades are or how many points we have when there exists a glut of nursing grads who can't find jobs all over the US.

I started OHSU's program this year at the Portland campus. At orientation the following stats given to us were: approx 400 applied for the 32 seats in Portland. Of those 32 selected: avg GPA was 3.93, 19 had previous college degrees, avg age 20-45, 4 males, 28 females.

I'm not writing to dissuade you from applying as I think you should. I just know that I would have loved knowing this information because I am so curious.

Good luck everyone!

I concur. I was told the same thing by an admissions person at OHSU. She basically said, "come in with a 4.0 to be on the safe side". I've got a 3.9GPA, and a previous degree, etc., and feel I'm within the ballpark, but I won't be applying there. I'll opt for a bridge placement should I get into either PCC or CCC. Anything I can do to save money.

I think you still apply to OHSU! I had the same stats, 3.9, previous degree, previous career. I know finances are tough but something always works out. They have a top notch program and if you want to further your education, I think it might help you get into their advanced programs. The instructors are phenomenal with such amazing backgrounds.

Private message me if you want to chat more. This is rare that I'm on here with my school load so it may take me a bit to get back to you.

jtpdx,

I have no doubt OHSU is a fine school. I just don't want to pay that much money for lower level classes I can get at a community college.

I completely understand. Good luck in your adventure! :)

Its really sad how much these schools rely on GPA's. I understand that getting good grades is important but there are a lot of things that take part in your grade, things like, teacher, time in your life (right out of high school vs. coming back after 10 years), etc. My first degree's GPA was a 3.49. 10 years later, I am actually enjoying school, yet my previous 3.49 is a disadvantage to me...which is sad. I'm also a single mom with a morgtage now and being perfect isn't so easy. I know a lot of 4.0 students that I for sure would not want them to be my nurse, they might be book smart but when it comes to real life and dealing with human beings, they fail big time! Anyhoo, I just needed to express that. I am not applying to OHSU this year because of the fact they rely so heavily on grades and it would just be a waste of $120 (which is the most expensive application fee I have seen, even outside of Oregon). While I'm here expressing my thoughts I should tell you that my roommate applied last year with a 4.0, previous degree, and tons of volunteer/life experiences and she did not get into OHSU either. Good luck to you all.

FenterRocks,

I couldn't agree more. GPA's are not the end-all be-all. As I often say, "the last place you'll find common sense is in academia".
