OHSU ABSN 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Oregon

I didn't see a thread.....although it is quite early yet for some to be thinking about the upcoming application session. I am a senior at Marylhurst/PCC, will be graduating Spring 2013 and applying to OHSU, Duke, and John Hopkins this Fall.

Anyone current students that have advice? Anyone who just applied have any tips for the application? Anyone else applying?

Good Luck to those taking Summer courses!

That was what one of the essay prompts was about.

(for the BSN and MSN programs)

I don't know that it is specifically a requirement, but the prompt indicated that it might be.

...and experience with vulnerable populations. I would love to hear about what any of your experiences are related to this.

I also don't have health care experience other than volunteering but for the essay prmpt I wrote about volunteering in the hospital as well as another volunteer experience that doesn't have to do with healthcare. I wasn't so sure about if it fit the vulnerable population theme but that's what I felt fit strongly with why I wanted to be a nurse so I went ahead and wrote about it anyways

With those two prompts I discussed my work as an intern in the care coordination office of a clinic working with the elderly population and their families, as well as mental health patients- and my experience as the spouse of someone with mental health issues.

I also brought up my personal experiences as an older pediatric oncology patient as something that inspired me to find a career in health care, especially related to nursing since my nurses made a huge difference in the care I received.

Anyone else here back-- last time I e-mail admissions last week they said early April still........

I spoke with a gal from admissions today. She stated that they should receive applicant files on April 8th allowing them to send letters out in mid April. I asked if they would tell an applicant over the phone if they've been accepted or denied and she replied, "under certain circumstance." She seemed slightly irritated with my questions so I didn't press the issue further.

Here's my situation:

I've been accepted to a program that starts April 8th, but OHSU is my first choice! I could potentially work longer at my current job if accepted.

That's a bummer I was hoping we would find out earlier, I'm getting so antsy!

Hopefully we'll find out earlier so you can find out before your other school starts

I would like to know for the HRSA scholarship-- which is due May 2nd, but you have to be accepted to a program in order to even apply- showing them proof and such. Ugh :( I am SO impatient.

I got an e-mail this morning refering to the 3 year BSN at OHSU that my file wouldn't be moing onto the next round.

i wonder how likely it is that I'll be accepted to the ABSN program then..........

jax67, I also received the email stating that my application would not be moving on to the next round. I am very disappointed of course. I have worked for OHSU doing medical research for almost 13 years. My undergrad GPA was not ideal (3.0), but it was in a very difficult major (human physiology). I also have a masters in business with a GPA of 3.91. All of my recent pre-requisites are 4.0's. I had to re-take about 6 classes. I felt that my essay was strong and it sucks that students are penalized for a GPA/degree earned 14 years ago.

mamakac ... they are just holding out on you with the good news! I do hope we hear soon :-)

I hope that is the case :) I have had a heartbreakingly challenging month (finals, my mom passed away, and anxious over applications) so good news is more than welcomed!

When I spoke to admissions today to clarify which program the e-mail was for, they did say it would be after April 8, probably around the 15th before letters went out.
