LTC & Skilled Nursing Facilities

Does any one work for an LTC or Skilled Nursing Facility they really enjoy working at?

Are they any companies slash facilities I should avoid?

There seem to be many positions open for these places which of course raises suspicious and concerns.

I did my clinicals at Prestige's Porthaven facility on NE Prescott.

Run, don't walk, away!

They pay a bit more than other places but not worth it.

No infrastructure. No bathrooms in the residents' rooms. You have to wheel/hoyer them to the loos every time.

good luck!

Bottom line is, LTC is horrid wherever you go...that's based on the facilities I've worked for, anyway. I have worked for both Prestige and Extendicare, and I have heard that Marquis and Avamere are the same. If you are lucky, you will find a facility where the management is supportive and you love your co-workers...however, it's still LTC and you are still going to be overworked wherever you go. I have finally given up after being an LPN for 2 years; I'm taking time off to find anything that will hire LPNs that is not nursing home work. I just finally became too stressed about making a potential deadly mistake because I could not handle the workload.

Sorry to sound so pessimistic...on a positive note, lots of Extendicare and Prestige facilities use med aids who work under their own licenses, so endless med passing is one less thing to worry about. If you are determined to work in LTC, definitely find out if you are responsible for passing your own meds.

That is exactly what I thought, no wonder their are so many openings at LTC's. Thank God, I finally landed a job, that is not at a nursing home. Since hospitals are no longer hiring LPNs in the Portland area, the competition for LPN jobs is crazy. With 3 LPN schools recently being opened and 2 more on the way, I do not see where there will be enough jobs for LPN grads.

So happy for you that you found something outside LTC. I wish I had been smarter about it when I first became an LPN a couple years ago; now I'm at the point where I have had way too many jobs and some companies do not want to hire me because of that. May I ask what job you were able to find?

I worked at Avamere the ALF part though. Whoa whatever you do don't go to the Pearl, I was only a Med aid but I heard all the stories about what was going over there. Bad times! Pt abuse etc... If you value your pts and your license run the other way.

Do you know if Avamere pays differentials or its a flat base?

I worked for an Avamere facility for about a month recently. I don't know if they paid a differential, b/c they kept me on evening shift after promising me nocs. I definitely would not recommend working for them.

All the Avamere facilities are like this. I don't know how they haven't been shut down, seriously.

OMG you are so right!! They did lose an $800,000 lawsuit a few years back for the death of a resident at one of their memory care facilities.

Wow, well the government site rate them 4 out of 5 stars so I don't know what to say with this.
