Fired in 1 day

U.S.A. Oregon

I am a nurse from Israel, worked for Legacy from october 2006 at med/surg (it was most medical)and today I just had a conversation with a safety/quality manager and was given an choice to quit myself or... she was going to fire me. This came as a result of 2 incident reports when I was rotated to serg unit ( 1 of them was the delay of surgery,- which I "did not report Low K level...a month ago the other report I was not shown at all, I was explained that I did not follow the protocol , did not sign here, there, and that it is UNSAFE for the patients , whom I take care of :(

I have a question Do all new grads really come to the unit with the knowlage of all protocols and procedures? I am not sure that next time some other protocol will not be new to me  :uhoh3:

What can I do to avoid such things? Is it OK in States to fire a person in 1 day and not to SHOW the report on him?

Thanks

Svetas

Sorry this happened to you, but I think you probably need a little more orientation and assistance that this facility was not willing to give you. I know your confidence is shaken but do not think you have no value as a nurse, just attempt to look for another job and speak up during the orientation process. Not everything will be covered but make sure you are comfortable with the high spots. No, new employees do not know all of the ins and outs of a facility's policy and protocols when they first start, but they are expected to ask for assistance and report subnormal values to the charge nurse, she should be your source for information when in doubt. Good luck.

Thanks for everybody , who answered, it was a hard time for me ( it will last some time)

Hey there,

how long after you started the new job did you have the first incident report? did you get any orientation to the unit? how long did it last? and does it match the length of time you're suppose to get? I don't think new grads are suppose to know all the protocols b/c these change from one floor to another, however, after 6 month on the floor you should have better knowlegde of the protocols. That's why i'm asking when did those incident reports happen? Anyway, i'm sorry you lost your job...what is the market like for nurses there?

The problem, that all my 6 months and orientation I have been on the MED side and both of reports were about surg pt. I did not have such experience preveously...It was hard to find my 1st job here( maybe because it was 1st job in States with no references) Hope will be better this time...I would prefure some less acute setting and not 12 hour shifts... but who knows!

Shabat Shalom! At doveret ivrit? Ani mi Haifa!
