Clackamas Community College Fall Cohort!

Hello All,

I will beginning in the fall at Clackamas. My name is Erin, I'm 27 years old with a previous Bachelor degree in Communication and Public Relations from Portland State University (I worked in PR for 4 years before deciding to change careers to nursing). I have a boyfriend that is a Firefighter and paramedic for Portland Fire & Rescue, so he is excited to have me go into the healthcare field. I'm pretty excited too. Can't wait for orientation next month. Cheers!

Here is what I received:

First year

Fall term -the focus of this term is Foundations of Nursing in regard to Health Promotion so our clinical hours/experiences are developed with that in mind. Students in clinical are promoting the health of our community through participation in health fairs, schools screenings, immunization clinics, etc. There is also dedicated 'clinical' time spent here on campus to teach you the skills you will need to be successful in these events (e.g. safe medication administration via injections, therapeutic communication, etc.)

Winter term - the focus of this term is Foundations of Nursing in regard to Chronic Illness. Conceptual understanding of chronic illnesses and how they affect the trajectory of a person's overall health and quality of life is the focus of this term. Learning activities provide the foundational knowledge that students will need to progress and 'think like a nurse'. These learning activities take place in dedicated clinical facilities...all students are assigned to either legacy Meridian Park, Providence Willamette Falls or Providence Milwaukie for these experiences...in addition, each student 'rotates' to a skilled nursing facility for 2 weeks to complete learning activities that focus on the older adult, transitional nursing specialties, etc.

Spring term - the focus of this term is Foundations of Nursing in regard to Acute Illness. Students are in the same clinical facility that they were at winter term (we found this to facilitate learning as opposed to having to learn a new facility each term during first year) and provide direct patient care to a variety of patients during the term. There is also the ability to spend time with IV therapy, in the operating room as well as wound clinics.

Second year

Fall term -the focus of this term is Nursing in regard to Acute Illness II (increased complexity) so our clinical hours/experiences are spent on more specialized units in urban facilities such as OHSU, Kaiser Sunnyside, Providence Portland as well as Legacy Meridian Park.

Winter term - the focus of this term is Nursing in regard to Chronic Illness II. This term focuses on palliative care, mental health and the management of multiple chronic illnesses. Clinical experiences include continuation at sites mentioned above in fall term as well as 5 week rotations in sites specific to mental health/illness. These sites vary from community opportunities to inpatient units. There is also an opportunity for those interested to spend 5 weeks in OB or pediatrics rather than on the acute care unit.

Spring term - the focus of this term is Integrated practicum and the students are spread out all over the city in a variety of units/facilities based on their area of focus/interest. Nothing is guaranteed, however I try really hard to place students where they want to be.

I emailed the nursing department about the clinicals and this is the response I got back. This email was a big part of my decision to choose CCC over PCC.

Hey everyone... I am excited to be a part of CCC's fall cohort as well! I am 32 years old, a mother of 3, & currently residing in the Milwaukie area. I have taken all of my prerequisites at Clackamas and it has always been my school of choice, so I am thrilled to have earned acceptance there. Here's to a fabulous start for us all!!

Yes, the orientation will be the official meet and greet. :) Only 4 days away... I'm really looking forward to it! I've heard about the requirements for many schools and am anxious to find out what we will need for Clackamas in regard to books & supplies. So amped!!
