Applicants to Portland area schools 2013

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hello everyone! I was an avid reader of last years articles on applying to schools here, and it really helped me get an idea of how many points I would need. I thought I'd return the favor. So far I've only applied at PCC with 54.5 points (I think). For some reason, I'm not getting any discretionary points at Chemeketa and very few at Mt. Hood, so I might just forgo them this year. Is it just me or are schools going to a model where you can only really have a chance if you take the prereqs there? Anyways, good luck everyone!!!!

Hmmm... More tips. You will hear a lot about 'Clinical Judgement', this is basically why nursing professionals make the clinical decisions they do. Focus on how the material lays the foundation for you to make appropriate decisions in the clinical environment and later in your practice. Being able to memorize and regurgitate the material is more an A&P strategy not a nursing school strategy - you have to be able to interpret and reflect on your clinical experiences and learn how your decisions affected your patient's treatment. Core to this, is not being afraid to fail - especially when you start doing Simulation (at OHSU you will do two Sims per quarter). This is the perfect time to test your judgement and gain a better understanding of your clinical preparation and grasp of the material. Reviewing your A&P material is fine, just don't stress too much about it - it will help in your Pathophys classes - but it might be helpful to review it closer to when you have a syllabus so that you can target your review on the systems you will be discussing. If your Health Promotions class is being taught by Isabelle Soule (most likely it will be) she will probably assign a book to read called 'The Spirit Catches You, and You Fall Down'. This is an excellent read, and even though she will tell you to enjoy your summer - I found it helpful to read it before the term started. It is an excellent book - and really a quick read. You will write a short reflection over it later in the Fall term. Again, if you have free time right now - enjoy it. Read a couple good non-nursing books - because they will likely be the last you read until June. :)

I got the call today! #33 and I just got it!

Yay!! I'm so glad you got a spot! I gave mine up this morning :) congrats!

Bradylee- I cannot find the group on Facebook now :( it disappeared and I don't know the new one lol help!

Congratulations Simonepier! I'm only 4 spots away now! Ugh, I'm nervous!

Congrats Simonepier! I have been refreshing and watching this thread for months waiting to see that you got the call. It was KILLING me to see it took two weeks between 32 and your call! UGH I am not looking forward to the stress knowing I am one call away! Fingers crossed it happens soon though! I am 41 on the list so seeing you get it ensures the list IS moving and now I have 7 people in from of me. But at the rate it is going I won't get in, I sure hope people drop last minute or don't have their shots in order or something. Now I need to wait for Bumblebramble to get in and then I know it won't be too long! I don't have all my shots/records yet but hoping to have it by the deadline that way when/if they call I will be ready.

Congrats Simonepier ! I think Bumblebramble is just one ahead of me.

:shy: I emailed PCC after orientation to know how many students ahead of me but they did not give out that information. I think they should.

I JUST GOT IN!!! So excited, can't even focus! I was #37 on the wait list and the lady who called me said that there were a few students who chose another school, so there's hope! It sounded like Yangyang will be in for sure, and Dantza you have a really good shot now! Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats Bumblebramble !!! I am so glad to hear it. Now I could have a hope.
