Question on doing pre-reqs for nursing in OSU

Currently I am a senior at High School and the thing is that I had everything planned (for example where I was going to college and what career I wanted to pursue). I have a class called Advanced Health Careers that helps students figure out what they want to be in the medical field as well as providing opportunities to do job shadowing for numerous different careers (nursing, physician, surgeon, pt, etc.). But recently the teacher of this class, who is a nurse, said that getting into OHSU by doing my pre-reqs is OSU is going to be very difficult because OHSU is very fond of its own sattelites (WOU, SOU, PSU, etc.). So I was just wondering if that truly is the case!?!

I'd like to know who is giving you such information. Where you do your prereqs has no bearing on your admittance. All of those that I did not have from my prior degree I took at Portland Community College: much less expensive than a university. It's your GPA and essay that matter. Also, getting some related experience is always a good idea, both to give you a better picture of the field, and for admission. Good luck!

I made a spelling mistake, I meant to say "pre reqs in OSU" not "pre reqs is OSU". And thank you for the reply marachne.

The main thing to consider is how OHSU accepts students. I believe it's 70% GPA, and 30% essay and Letters of Rec.

I didn't even apply to OHSU after being declined from Lane Community College's nursing program, and I was 1 term from graduating from OSU. LCC denied me based on my merit points, which are strongly affected by GPA. In June 2007, the average acceptance GPA to a community college was 3.92. On the other hand, I was accepted to an out of state accelerated program without interview. Go figure!

Looking back, I had a pretty good experience at OSU, but it was hard competing for my grades against 500 students in anatomy compared to a 50 student community college class.

If you are dead-set to get into ANY nursing school of your choice, I would attend community college to maximize your GPA.

I think the only way this would be true is if you are already in attendance at a satellite campus and are applying to the program at that campus. For example, I'm currently a student at SOU and if I apply to the SOU program I may be just slightly favored for that program because it adds to the school's retention. But if I apply to the Portland campus, I highly doubt that having been at SOU instead of OSU would make any difference at all - I'm transferring in either way.
I hope this helps.

I don't think it works that way. SOU doesn't have a say in OHSU's program, Admissions is different, the Registrar is different....anyone who would be looking at "retention" works for a different university.

That being said, I'm a first year student in OHSU's program on SOU's campus and I would estimate the amount of folks who did their pre-reqs at SOU is somewhere between 1/3 to a 1/2 of my class. The rest come from all over Oregon, California, Washington and Alaska.

So, I would agree with some of the above folks....just get your prereq's done in the cheapest way possible.

I was under the impression that the affiliation between OHSU and the satellite school was more intricate than that, but I'm completely willing to believe that you know better seeing as you're in the program! Thanks for correcting me and sorry to the OP for misinformation.
