Question about Providence Scholarship Interview

Hello everyone!!! I am yet another newbie!!! First off, I hope everyone has had a wonderful morning, afternoon, and evening! To introduce myself, I am a pre-nursing student at Linn-Benton CC and would like to pursue a BSN degree. This is my 2nd year of college and I have just started to look at BSN offering schools. So far I have looked at Linfield, University of Portland, and OHSU. I wish I looked at the pre-reqs for each place much earlier because it is different from an ADN @ LBCC. I can probably finish the pre-reqs for U of P next year since they require less than the others, especially chemistry. The one school I am leaning towards is the University of Portland, but I don't know if I can make it financially. I did read about the Providence Scholarship they offer, but when I read the word "INTERVIEW", it felt like doomsday for me!!! That word is like a spider to me. (I have major arachnophobia...) When it comes to interviews, I ... I... can't do it. In modern terms I "freak out!" I mean I'm not that great at school nor am I a good speaker... I know first impressions are everything! ahhh!! interviews are just frustrating for me!!!
Anyways, I was wondering for those who have been through the interview, or know about it, could you elaborate about it? Knowing about it may ease my fright just a tad...I hope! I appreciate any help!

I'm currently attending the University of Portland and I am a Providence Scholar. Let me set your mind at ease. The interview for the scholarship is one-on-one (Providence nursing manager and the applicant) and takes about 30 minutes. You will be asked questions regarding your situational behavior instead of what skills you know. Example questions: How do you handle a stressful situation? Can you give me an example of a time you failed? How did you cope with the failure? How do you interact with others? They'll also ask you why you want to be a nurse and finish the interview with a case study. They'll give you a sheet describing a conflict on a nursing floor where you are in some way involved (manager, nurse leader, etc...). They will then ask you to describe how you'd handle the interview.

While the interview is important, grades are also extremely important. If you want to know specific statistics or have other questions you can PM me.

Good luck,
Evan

Wow... thank you for your reply!!! It does ease my mind a little knowing how the interview goes...although it won't be for maybe another year before I apply, but it really did help! Thank you so-o-o-o much! I probably WILL ask you more in the future when my time comes to apply, so don't be surprised if you hear from little 'ol me again ^_^. But, knowing myself so well, I might just ask you more Q's in a few days. Thanks again!

The reply about questions has led me to a reccomendation. I go to PCC and have taken 1 credit conflict, time, and stress management classes. The answers to those questions I learned in my classes. Maybe you should look into the classes, I was suggested to take them for my interviews. Good luck!

Do you happen to know how many scholarships will be handed out and if getting an interview is that big of a deal?

I don't know exactly how many will be handed out, but i don't think it is very many. Last year I met with a woman who was involved with the process and she told me that they are waiting for some people with the scholarship to graduate before they give out a lot again. Does that make sense? Basically, there is so much money invested in the current students with not a whole lot getting back to them. So, of course, they still will give out scholarships, but i don't think they are as much as the first few years they were doing it. I'm not sure if the scholarhsip is effected by the economy, but i know that providence is hurting and trying to save money wherever they can. I'm nervous because i know a woman who is amazing...amazing grades, lot of extra activities, and she's a great person, but she didn't get the scholarship. she had an interview, but no dice. i don't know why she didn't get it, but it makes me nervous. Let's hope we do better, right?
Good luck to you!!!
oh, and you should pat yourself on the back for getting an interview! pat yourself on the back for even getting IN to the school. Good for you
