Portland or Vancouver

by flg8tr

Hi there-
I'm considering moving to Portland or perhaps Vancouver, WA -my GF and I want to live closer to her parents. Can anyone tell me what hospitals in the area are paying these days? I am an RN-BSN with 3+ years experience in acute care neuro, telemetry/ms and interventional radiology.
Thanks!

I'd check the individual hospital websites, there can be a big difference for what reads like the same position from hospital to hospital and even within the same job posting.

I also wouldn't move here without already having a job, The metro area is pushing 12% unemployment and it is NOT any better for nurses.
I know from my own HR dept at one of the major hospital systems in town that we are in a silent hiring freeze - I say silent because the jobs are posted and they are accepting applications but they aren't actually hiring anyone for the jobs as it's being filled by part timers who are job sharing or accepting full time.
I don't believe we're the only system doing it.

I've heard of other places doing this, but I still can't figure out what the benefit for the system is to post these jobs and not hire for them. Any ideas?

I'm guessing it's so they can look like they're hiring (and therefore add to the famous "nursing shortage") while not actually hiring? I'm not quite sure. Legacy's postponed their nursing internships again. =/

I just saw a new article that OHSU is hiring again, here in Portland, OR. I also know Providence is as well. With your experience, I dont think you will have a hard time, finding something!! Good Luck!!

Thanks guys. We haven't really decided anything yet but it's good to know that hospitals up there are at least hiring.
I think the hardest part would be the pay cut compared to where I work now. SF pays 50+/h. It's easy to get spoiled here.

BrownEyes98, I think I know what article you are talking about -- was it with regard to research? I just spoke in person with the nurse recruiter at OHSU and she said the research grant was not translating into nursing positions and that they aren't hiring. The few positions they have open from time to time tend to get filled by inhouse people and are gone within a few days. She was nice as could be and tried to be helpful but basically conveyed that the situation is pretty bleak.

I would most definitely not move up here without a firm job offer.
