out of state new grad license


Hi, I'm a senior nursing student at UNC Chapel Hill. I graduate in May and am moving to Oregon to start my nursing career. I was wondering if I should wait and take my NCLEX out in Oregon, or is there an option to take it in NC and make it applicable to OR, that is, is there a box you can check for what state you want a license in. Also, how do I go about getting an Oregon license as a new grad. Do I need to let my school know that is what I am doing? Really confused as to the protocol here, could use some help. Thanks!

I would call the Oregon BON on this one, I've heard it's best to take the NCLEX in the new state if you are moving right away, but unsure on the specifics.

Check out the website http://www.osbn.state.or.us/ I am going to school in Cali and am looking into moving back home to Portland after graduation. My understanding is that you have to provide a letter of verification that you passed NCLEX from the state that you took it in. The website has all the info you need. Hope that helps

The info I got is that if you are never planning to practice in the state you are training at, just go straight to the state you are. So in your case, pursue the Oregon route.
The BON website has nearly everything you need, including a walk-thru on how to go about it. Your school has to provide something relating to you passing school and you provide the information for the application and your transcripts, but it is all there. Oh, you can't request the application on-line, it has to be done over the phone.

Make it easy.
There is no reason to apply to the BON in your state that you are currently in if you are not going to work there. Apply directly to Oregon BON with License by Examination application.

The NCLEX exams are national and can be take in any Pearson-Vue center that is approved for NCLEX testing. You can easily write the exam for Oregon before you move there.

And always recommend that you get the exam out of way before moving. Too many new stressors added in do not help.

You are not required to take the exam where you went to school or are currently living. So there is no need to endorse. Just do the applicaiton directly with Oregon and save yourself quite a bit of money and time.

I wasnt endorsing anything just passing on information that I found. I posted the website to the OREGON BON because thats where the OP wanted to work. I certainly wasnt giving advice, just trying to help.
