New grads: hows the job hunt going?

My brothers girlfriend is a new grad and she is looking for a job. She isn't having much luck. I know most facilities (mine included) are on a hiring freeze. I was wondering just how many of you out there are having a hard time getting that first job? Who's hireing? Is the current job market as bad as it seems?

How's it going out there?????

(good luck and best wishes everyone)

I am not a grad yet (one more year!) but a coworker graduated and passed the NCLEX in September and he finally now has a job that is starting in August, he has to move to Olympia Washington because he was unable to find any jobs in Oregon. Another coworker graduated in March and she has been to several job interviews but no such luck for a job. The market in Oregon is saturated and everyone is on freezes hope the economy turns around soon.

I'm graduating from Excelsior in about 2 months, I see jobs on Salem hosp. web site, Good Sam Corvallis, Silverton... are they really not hiring or are certain specialties really difficult to get a job in? I want to do ER since I am a paramedic.

I think they are just not hiring across the board (every dept) at Providence hospitals at least (externals and new grads). I hear the same with others facilities as well.

I am able to search our job postings availiable to internal applicants and there are a TON of jobs in the ER at St V's. Since I work there, I cant see what is being shown as availiable to external applicants. There are a few other jobs in other departments as well.

The summer usually brings low census at our facility. I think that is part of the reason for the hiring freeze. Another is that economic turn down that we are all hearing about and dealing with. We are getting called off of our shifts for low census. Not super terrible, but it is happening. The way our union negotiated the way the mandatory day off list works, I never move more that 7 places from the tippy top. I usually first to get the ax on night shift (for mandatory). I usually loose 4-8 or so hours a month.

I would rather sleep in a few hours every so often than have one of my newer hire friends get laid off. I am soooo glad no one is getting laid off at St V's.

Unhappy Re: New grads: hows the job hunt going?
'Tis the season for low census, that's for sure. We're getting canceled (or at least placed on stand-by) at least once a pay period at Good Sam. And as for hiring? Nothing. Nada. Zip. We had a student do her senior practicum with us and she's going to continue to work as an aide as she can't find a job for her as a RN. Last year she would have already had a job with us. We've hired no one in the last 2 typical hiring cycles (December grads and now Spring grads) where we usually hire at least a couple. Every senior I talked to that rotated through our floor has pretty much said the same thing.

Good luck to all...

I currently work at ST. V's as an on-call secretary. I learned that once I get my RN license I am no longer able to work as a HUC because the RN license puts me into a "different" category. So, taking my boards in early July and no RN job yet. Damn.

UGHH that is really frustrating to hear! I am a nursing student in Iowa and for the last 3 years my husband and I had planned on moving to Corvallis once I'm done with school in December! I get emails like DAILY from Good Sam saying they are hiring RN's, but apparently not new grads it would seem? We've waited SO long to move away from here, I don't want to end up working in a gas station

Kennewick General Hospital in Kennewick, Washington, in the Tri Cities, had a ad in the Spokesman Review on Thursday, 4/2/09. They are looking for nurses to "suppport the increased clinical needs of the Hospital District". The ad states that "RNs are needed in multiple modalities".

Their phone number is (509) 586-5650. You can apply online at their website, www.kennewickgeneral.com.

I would try them on Monday, after the holiday. Tri cities is in South Central Washington. It is warmer there than in other areas of Washington, and is an up and coming area in Washington State.

Good luck!
