Fired in 1 day

by svetas

I am a nurse from Israel, worked for Legacy from october 2006 at med/surg (it was most medical)and today I just had a conversation with a safety/quality manager and was given an choice to quit myself or... she was going to fire me. This came as a result of 2 incident reports when I was rotated to serg unit ( 1 of them was the delay of surgery,- which I "did not report Low K level...a month ago the other report I was not shown at all, I was explained that I did not follow the protocol , did not sign here, there, and that it is UNSAFE for the patients , whom I take care of

I have a question Do all new grads really come to the unit with the knowlage of all protocols and procedures? I am not sure that next time some other protocol will not be new to me
What can I do to avoid such things? Is it OK in States to fire a person in 1 day and not to SHOW the report on him?

Thanks
Svetas

It isn't nice to fire a person after one day but, in most US states, you are an "employee at will," and yes, you can be fired for anything except race, religion, or sexual orientation.

I don't really understand what you did. How low was the K? Which facility was this at and what was the procedure the patient was to undergo? Was it something like you didn't have the patient sign a consent form or was it really some abstract-far out there-paper that didn't get signed? I am sorry you lost your job.

Hey there,
how long after you started the new job did you have the first incident report? did you get any orientation to the unit? how long did it last? and does it match the length of time you're suppose to get? I don't think new grads are suppose to know all the protocols b/c these change from one floor to another, however, after 6 month on the floor you should have better knowlegde of the protocols. That's why i'm asking when did those incident reports happen? Anyway, i'm sorry you lost your job...what is the market like for nurses there?

My orientation was OK 6-8 weeks in med. part and there I feel preaty confident.
I have been working for for 6.5 months, but in the medical part , this was my 2 or 3 shift rotation to the surg part and of course, I did not know a lot ( that I had to call Anasteziologist before setting epidural, because the pt had entrathecal ... ) but nothing happened to the Pt, just they investigated every step of mine and found a lot NOT DONE BY PROTOCOL, then I was told that phisitians complained and oncologists... I did NOT work with oncology doctors at all...

In morning labs K was 2.9 , consent was signed, preop check list done, the Dok decided to take Pt to surgery at 1200 and at 1300 she was already down to OR, so everything went fast...

Sorry that you lost your job with no written warning. I do have some questions though. Would you have called the Doc about a K level of 2.7 on the med side? That is really low and should be called on any floor. Let me get the other problem correct, you started a epidural pump on your own!! Have you ever done that before?
