I'm a surgical tech., I love scrubbing. The problem I find is this. It's a dead end job! In order to make more money or have more options I have to get back in school. I'm now in school for nursing. I want to have more marketable skills. I love surgery. I love scrubbing!

Go be an ST, keep going to school, get an ADN then a BSN, then get an RNFA....youll be great.

So have you made your decision?? Have you researched it and talked to some OR Tech's in your area?

Surgical techs are the backbone of the OR suite, and a good tech is very appreciated. But the job is very physically demanding. Techs have to stand in one position for hours and endure hot lights, aching muscles, and often, the abuse of surgeons. As a rule, their pay is about half of that of the RN circulator, even though the job is very physically demanding.

At the hospital where I am OR Charge nurse, my best tech is a former CENA that had nothing but OJT. My poorest tech has an Associate's degree and is certified. She has a short attention span and her sterile technique is weak. Many hospitals will train the right person from the ground up. A good tech is organized and detailed, willing to work hard. It is not an esy job, it does not pay well. But OR techs are very respected .

Ok, have patience with me please lol. I have a couple terminology questions if you do not mind. First what does "perioperative period" mean? Is it the time during surgery? I know that pre-op is where the patient (me in most cases lol) is prepped for surgery, and I know post-op is basically where the patient is woken up. Also, what do you love about scrubbing? I mean when you all are saying scrubbing, are you all talking about cleaning?

    Thanks,

    Nick

I loved being an LVN but love being an RN even MORE. Especially
when I see my paycheck and the opportunities. Keep going. I too
am the same age as you and hope to finish my BSN by the time I
    hit the big 5-0!
Thank you for your encouragement. Good for you too, going to school at our age(hehe)is something else. LOL, I was the oldest in our class, but seriousely it didn't make too much of a difference. Well, I finally graduated and now waiting to take NCLEX(on June 25th). I am working right now at a nursing home 32 hrs per wk. I am planning on going for RN, as you have said, with RN, there are more opportunities, more $$ etc......They will help with the cost so why not. LOL, just not ready right now.
Good luck with your schooling too. Are you taking any classes now? I was thinking of taking some in the fall. I really need to sit with a counselor and see exactely what I need for prereqs and all that. I am hoping that they will take some of my old credits and/or maybe I will clep(sp) some.
    Take Care,

If my memory serves me right Perioperative is before surgery and intraoperative is during the procedure. "Scrubbing" is a term that means you have scrubbed outside of the OR and are now sterile. the doctor that's operationg scrubs and the ones passing instruments and assisting scrub. That's what you see on tv when they are washing their arms\hands right before surgery.

    Corret me If I'm wrong!

oh well, at least the majority of this does not concern me lol. All I know is that by the time I would be wheeled into the OR that I will have already lost my mind and would soon be asleep lol!
