can some one tell me what surgical technicians do?
Simply put, they pass surgical instruments to the surgeon and assist the surgeon during the procedure (suctioning the area, retracting tissues, etc). They set up the sterile field prior to the case starting and assist the circulator in making sure everything needed for the case is available. They also keep an eye out for things the surgeon needs and can alert the circulator (ex. accidently nick a vessel and need a vascular stitch right away) and keep track of medications once they are on the sterile field (i.e. heparinized saline, lido w/ epi.)
