Weekend/Night OR crews...

Specialties Operating Room

I have a question and anyone is welcome to answer...

Are there hospitals with weekend or night OR teams anymore? I don't mean those with a pager during that time, I mean people who actually in the OR during those times.I'm looking into possibly doing that next year but a part of me wonders if I should even bother. I'm in Dallas, does anyone know of any hospitals in the Dallas area with that?

I appreciate any information you can share, thanks:)

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

Our hospital does that, but we're in Va.

Look for hospitals that are level 1 trauma centers

Our hospital is a level 1 and we have a night crew 1 RN 1 surg tech Sunday-Fri. overnight call team every night of the week ......2 teams on the weekends until 6:00pm then just the call team & a 2nd call call team from home on pager....it usually works well...or we are just accustomed to the routine.....

I work in a level 1 trauma hospital and we have 2 RNs and 2 techs scheduled to work every night. On top of that, we usually have 2 RNs, 2 techs, 1 heart and 1 liver on call every night.

I work in a trauma centre. M-F we have 9 RN's/ ORT's (usually only 1 or 2 ORT's) working from 3-11 then 2 RN' s or 1 RN and 1 tech on from 11-7 PLUS 1 on call for Gen/plastics/vasc, 1 on call for ortho, 2 on call for neuro and 3 on call for cardiac. Seems a little excessive doesn't it? sad to say it isn't

I dont work in the US. But where I do work here in australia, we work 24/7.

We have 22 theatres, with two working overnight, more if there is a transplant. 3 RNs overnight with 1 EN with 6 oncall for various specialities. 2 techs for anaesthetics. We never close. God at times I wished that we did!!!!!!!!!!!It can be a real shocker sometimes!!!!!!!!!

Specializes in surgical, emergency.

I work at a small rural hospital, 3 OR'S, but we are a level III, the only one in a 30 to 40 mile radius.

We are on call from 3:30 pm until 7 am Mon thru Fri., 7 am Sat till 7 am Mon for the weekend shift.

We carry beepers, and live around 20 mins away.

If a room runs over hours, the call team takes over until finished.

If there are two rooms running at 3:30, we take volunteers for the other room.

We don't do heart, or neuro, other wise what ever comes in, you got it.

Same on the weekends.

Currently, we do about every 5th weekend on call. One or two days a week, depending on the rotation.

Call crew consists of an MD anesth., OR RN, TECH, and PACU RN.

Specializes in OR,ER,med/surg,SCU.

level 2..........at least one staff in house at all times. I work 11a to 11p of which time we have one RN and two techs in house at minimum. colorado

we are not a level one trauma hospital. we have 11 ors, 2 are heart rooms. but we staff 24 hours a day 7 days a week. there is a nurse and a tech working weekend day shift and an rn only with tech on call for saturday night. there is an rn and tech for sunday night. one of the many duties these people have is to set up the rooms for monday cases. i work in tennessee.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

Agree, we staff 24/7 because we're trauma. Look for trauma centers or larger hospitals that are likely to get emergency cases from a large area, such as appy's and the like.

Good luck!
