SHOES??

Hello All,

What kind of shoes does everyone prefer in the OR? I have started to look for something that will be comfortable for standing all day and durable...

I've heard that Danskos or Sanitas might be good... I tried on some Born but felt like I might fall off the taller heel! :sarcastic:

Recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Are you allowed to wear regular sneakers? If you are, I suggest Nike iDfree 5.0. I don't work in OR, but they definitely are like walking on clouds.

I rotate back and forth between a pair of regular sneakers and a pair of Klogs that have a full back to them. I would strongly advise against anything with an open heel (may not be permitted by dress code and definitely hard to do any running in). Danskos are just too much arch for me, but I know some people who swear by them. If there is a shoe store near you that provides it, I would get a personal assessment done. That's how I ended up with the type of sneakers that I did, and they are really comfortable. The only reason I have the Klogs is for days I scrub- they're completely fluid resistant whereas the sneakers have that canvas part.

True, I actually didn't think about the canvas on the sneakers. I have the same problems with Danskos. OP, you could always try getting sneakers that have full leather so they are easier to clean? But I agree with Rose Queen, I would get your feet personally assessed if possible so you can get a pair that is more specific to you

I alternate between keen leather sneakers/trail shoes and Alegrias....I have the Alegria style that covers the entire foot, not the Mary Janes or backless style. I wore Danskos for years and suddenly they're not working for me...they're bruising my instep. The Alegrias are lower profile, lower heel, and easier to run in. I really like them so far and they seemed to break in right away. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for the comments! I have tried on Dansko and they seem to be comfortable, and I am told Sanita are almost identical. I found a site that has factory seconds on Sanita... only $62 as compared to $120. I may take a chance and order these.

Next one to check into is Alegria... I found a retailer close by. And a foot assessment is a great idea. I'll ask about the sneakers, too.

I suppose I could wait for the first day of orientation on Thursday... and ask what everyone wears. I could have also waited until then to get my textbook - Alexander's - but I wanted my own and already have it. YES, I'm excited to start this training!! :roflmao:

A thought on canvas sneakers: even though they can get soaked through with bodily fluids :scrying:, you can supposedly run them through the washing machine. Definitely not a possibility for leather clogs.

I've had a few pairs of the Anywhere brand clogs. Less pricey but I find them comfortable.

There is no way I'm bringing home work dedicated shoes soaked in bodily fluid let alone putting them in my home washing machine- the only place those are going are in the trash! Work won't wash anything they don't own. Shoes need to be replaced every so often anyway- if they get soaked, they'll just get replaced ahead of schedule.

My Klogs aren't leather- they're PVC or rubber or something else completely waterproof, so they get washed off with the germicidal wipes we use to clean the OR between patients when needed. I do the same with the non fabric parts of my sneakers. The fabric part so far is only spotted with Chloraprep, no bodily fluids.

A very good point, Rose Queen.

Lol, I recently emailed the people at Dansko about using Cavi Wipes on my leather clogs. The response I got was "Use our leather conditioner to keep your shoes in tip top shape!" I wrote them back and said, "That's nice, but when my shoes get puked/pooped/bled on, leather conditioner ain't gonna cut it." No response back.

Clogs for scrub days, don't get those much anymore.... Running shoes for circulator days, I like new balance or asics, which ever is on sale.

And I'm guessing you wear the rubber or vinyl clogs on scrub days, like Rose_Queen? What brand is best? I've seen a few that look ok... Thanks!
