Shoes?

by Aneroo

I didn't put this in the shoe forum since I wanted OR nurse input, not random people.
What type of shoes do you wear? What works best for the long shifts on the feet? I expect to start with scrub training (mostly to learn instruments) and then start training for circulating nurse.

Danskos. Have worn them for years and never a problem. They don't break down as fast as walking or running shoes.

Thanks! I have some Dansko's now, and want to get another pair. I've literally worn through the leather insole from wearing them so much.

Just be aware that if you have weak ankles and/or klutz tendencies, that Danskos may not be the best choice for circulating. The minute I stepped on a cord or slightly uneven surface, my ankles would roll.

Danskos are better for standing, I agree. They are the choice for many chefs as well. I used them for about 9 months in the OR when circulating. Went back to a good quality run/walk shoe (Asics). They are the best for me, in tight spaces and moving all over equipment, cords, etc. I've noticed lots of people try the Danskos. Especially RNs and anesthetists. Most go back to atheletic shoes.

Been wearing Danskos for years, never have changed back. I love them, you just have to get used to them.

I am a Dansko convert as well. Just got my first pair about 4 months ago, and absolutely love them! What I found though, is that each pair fits differently, so try on several in your size if possible. I tried on 5 different pairs before settling on mine.

I thought I might have trouble with my ankles (I am a chronic ankle-sprainer) but after the first week I didn't have problems anymore... plus my feet stopped aching at the end of every day.

They're not for everyone, but I think they're worth a try!!

Good point. I've only fallen once, but have lost count of the near falls! I fell in December, and my knee still kills me.

Spira shoes work great for me. Plus replacing your shoes at least every six months is a good idea.

I too have been circulating in the O.R. for a long time. About 4 years ago, I discovered C&C Sweden. Their shoes are very comfortable. You have to purchase them on line or you can usually find a booth at AORN Congress.
