Specialties Operating Room

After many years away just rehired to OR. This hospital does not provide scrubs. OR nurses expected to purchase their own and wear them into work . This goes against everything I was ever taught in my very lengthy previous time in OR. Also you have to park several blocks from hospital and take a bus in all while in your scrubs. Is this normal procedure now?

It is where I work and at the majority of hospitals in my area.

Do you keep extras at work for contaminated cases where you need to change and do you wear them home or do you bring clothes to change into?

No, you should not be wearing scrubs into work.

Is there a place to change when you get there.

They provide scrubs for us if we get contaminated.

They have a locker room didn't look like anyone used it though.

Please don't come to work to help operate on me if you've worn your scrubs to work. More so, please stay away from me after riding a bus to work, or a train, or walked the streets, or have just left a cruise ship, either, thanks.

Definitely not what AORN recommends. Sounds like the hospital is just out to save a few bucks at the expense of best practices for patient care.

A quick look at the AORN standards will show how wrong this is

I agree! I have been away 10 years and I was told some things had change. While there shadowing I was shocked to see the scrub techs with nail polish. I was told that AORN standards say its ok if not chipped. Who has time to check the scrub techs nails? Not feeling good about it but feel lucky to have been hired after being away so long.
