Post operative TURP irrigation

  1. 0
Any different between soft bag Saline or plastic bag Saline for using post-operative TURP irrigation ? Our surgeon said that post operative blockage usually due to not using the soft bag saline. Because the air pressure on semi-rigid saline bottle is not good. However, the price of the soft bag saline is more expensive. What is your practice and comments?

Over here, we mainly use the soft-bag saline. And that is only because it is the same manufacturer of our IV fluids, at least at most facilities.

Whether the bottle is glass, firm plastic, or the soft bag should not be an issue. The rate at which it goes in is the deciding factor. It has nothing to do with pressure..........at least in all of the cases that I have done and seen.
What type of tubing are you using? How fast is your flow rate of fluid?

This is also the first time that I have ever seen this mentioned.

Thanks. Actually, what kind of tubing using in your institutions? We are using the Y-type blood transfusion set with high flow rate..

We use tubing specific for CBI and the firm plastic square bottles.

Why would you use blood tubing, which has a built in microfilter which I suspect makes it more expensive than what we normally use--that is, either cysto tubing or TUR tubing, which also has a "Y" so that 2 large volume bags can be hung, if desired, and run wide open or the rate controlled with the roller clamp.

Cysto tubing and TUR tubing are specifically designed for irrigation. Blood tubing seems an unnecessary expense.

We usually use the 3000cc saline bag. the rate of irrigation is usually set according to the color of the urine. i find that by using the 3000cc saline bag the foley rarely get blocked up, as people usually set the rate faster than if they were using the 1000cc bag becau se tey dont have to change the bags as often.l
