Perioperative nursing qualifications

  1. I am a CNA planning to go on to get a BSN, and specialize in preoperative nursing. Do I need extra training after the BNS?

You will definitely need extra training, even after the BSN. Unfortunately what we learn in nursing school does not transfer to the OR. Find a hospital that has a periop program available, mine is a total of 6 months. I have heard it is extremely difficult to get into the OR, but luckily it was my first interview out of nursing school. If it is as difficult as they say, I would try to get in as an ACP in the OR, maybe even an anesthesia tech. Hopefully by the time you get out they will want you to be one of their RN's! Good luck!
