Hello,

I am a new grad and will be interviewing for the OR in a few days time and I was wondering if anyone can give me

any clues or advice on the type of questions I might expect to hear pertaining specifically to the OR. I was told it was a group

interview which makes me a little nervous. Any help would be appreciated.

Smile a lot. Never say anything negative. Study a surgery book beforehand. Tell them you can handle a lot of stress (if you can)

When I had my interview I said that I wasn't interested in the OR when I first started nursing school but I ended up really enjoying my clinical day there. I had a few more routine questions (how do you handle conflict, what strategies do you use to manage your time), and then the manager said, "Well we're looking for someone who says 'I just like the OR...'" The she said I could come shadow and tell them yes or no. :)

Thanks! I actually got to sit in on minor and major surgeries during nursing school and I enjoyed it. I am definately interested in OR but it was something I was hoping to do later in my career. That being said, job offers are not coming in, and if they offered this to me I'd take it in a heart beat. I'm not in a position to be picky, I just want a foot in the door, someone to give me a chance and then I can go from there. I'm really nervous about it being a group interview. I was told it will be me and other candidates. I do not know how many. Sigh. This is nerve wracking. I had an OR interview almost 6 months ago, and I didn't get it I think because at the time I didn't take the NCLEX yet and didn't have my license, and I don't want to screw this one up either. Worse its an interview at a hospital where it is impossible to get in as a new grad.

Hi there! I was wondering how your interview went - what type of questions did they ask? etc... I'm a NG and have an interview for an OR training program (tomorrow!) and could use any help I can get.

And... did you get the job? :-)

Thanks!!

I was asked how I felt around difficult personalities, the basic what are your top qualities and negative qualities, give examples of how you are able to resolve issues quickly...for instance, if you can't find an item the surgeon wants, or don't know what he's asking for and there is no one around to ask...can you think on your feet? They keep drilling the point of whether or not I could handle the pressure. Be sure to come off very confident even you don't feel confident at the moment. They want to know that you can assert yourself well. Basic interview techniques, but might be helpful:

Never say "I THINK I'm good at..." or "I FEEL that..." instead, "I am GREAT at..." "I do ... well." And when they ask about your negative qualities, turn it into a positive. Sometimes I miss the mark by...but this can help me in the OR by... Don't give them a negative quality that can't be fixed.

Thank you for the advice! I had my interview this morning and I think it went well. I used your tips and made positive statements ("I AM great at...") instead of more passive ones... :-) Fingers crossed!
