Med/Surg or OR?

by nrsman1

Hello I am a nursing student who is about to graduate from RN school this december, and I have a delimma I need some advice on. I have always enjoyed the OR; the atmosphere, the one patient at a time, the medical aspect of it. I just got off the phone with my HR representative at the hospital where I work (currently a LPN for 5 months working one day a week on rehab) and I asked her if I should work on the med/surg floor since I will be new. I also told her that my interest is in OR. She told me that they hire new grads in the OR but it depends on the nurse manager. She stated that the OR manager would determine if they thought I could handle it or not, or if I was ready. What do you all think? what skills do I need to have? or do I just need to be confident and go get at em. Thanks for your time.

If you are sure you want to work in the OR, then go train in the OR. If you end up not liking it, usually med-surg is always hiring (though maybe not as much right now, with this economy.) I hope this helps.
Btw, I wish I would have took my own advice, now I am stuck trying to get out of Med-surg
