I have to admit that I prefer working with nurses who are medium to tall. Main reason is because when your manual handling a patient the height is ALWAYS adjusted for the smaller person (hospital policy), which means that I have to bend more, and risk hurting my back. One nurse (under 5 foot) cannot reach across her sterile field to take items from the scout nurse, so you have to walk around the set up which not easy when you have multiple trolleys and little room to get in there.

We have 2 techs that are barely 5' tall. Come to NC, we'll hire you. Never heard of such a thing.

Loved the "footstool" comment.

Let the shortest person grab the feet, then you don't have to adjust.

Let me see now...I've been five feet tall since the age of about 12. I was five foot tall when I started nursing school, and 25 years later, am still five feet tall and have been an OR nurse since 1984....and we had a tech who was fourft ten!..

Personally, @ OP, I'd go to risk management and suggest that this is discrimination. Ask to see the policy. If there is none( and I doubt there is one in the first place), then mention discrimination lawsuit- and see how fast you get hired as an OR nurse.

Idiots!

Yah, we do have that new fangled thing, that footstool thing a mig. I'm thinking it may have caught on here or there.

plain and simple discrimination. There is no height requirement that I have ever been made aware of.

I try not to be discouraged but I would like for those OR nurses out there (from all countries included) to give me the real picture. Thanks a lot!

you haven't heard such a thing about height requirement thats because you havent been into philippine nursing.
Hospitals here are very, very choosy (i cant blame them, as there is an oversupply of nurses here) some hospitals are even more choosy, they would choose someone who looks prettier, (no pimples/scars etc.)

a note about the thread starter, im tall and most doctors in our hospital (especially OB surgeons) are around 5'4 max (im 5'11) so what do i get after a long case? a pain in my lower back I do hope you'll use this argument the next time an HR personnel would tell you about your height.

I grew up in the philippines. Was in Lianga bay, Mindanao, Davao, then in manila. I actually know a bit about the hospitals there. You still are facing discrimination just because of your small stature. And to base it on looks is also discrimination. Good luck to you, kayo ang bahala.
